READING, Pa. – Shaniyah Taylor had 11 kills and hit .667 to lead the Albright women's volleyball team to a three-set sweep of Penn State Brandywine at Bollman Center on Tuesday night. Albright won 25-23, 27-25 and 25-21.
Claudia Guise had 30 assists, three aces, nine digs and four kills.
In game one, the Lions trailed 20-15 and 22-18 before storming back with seven of the final eight points of the set to win it, 25-23. On that final streak, Guise had an ace while
Paige Westra had a pair of kills. Her second was the game-winning point. Westra finished with five kills, nine digs and a pair of aces.
The Lions displayed a strong offense in the second set. Albright hit .367 in the game while holding Penn State Brandywine to .000. Despite that, Albright again was down, 15-8, after three consecutive aces by Becca Civera. Albright fought back with a kill by
Katie Schmerse and an ace from Guise to cut the deficit to 15-13. Later,
Kellie Hill and Taylor had back-to-back kills to give Albright an 18-17 lead. Hill finished with nine kills.
The teams traded points all the way to 25-25. Schmerse's point gave Albright the advantage, and an ace by
Becca Davis sealed game two in Albright's favor. Schmerse finished with five kills and 11 digs while Davis chipped in with a team-high 15 digs.
In game three, Albright again trailed early, 8-5. The Lions rattled off nine consecutive points to take control of the set. Taylor's two kills on the streak highlighted the run. PSU Brandywine pulled the set to 23-21, but the Lions finished the match with two more kills from the Taylor.
Albright returns to action this weekend at the Catholic University of America Guetle Invitational. The Lions will play four matches, beginning with two on Friday.
