READING, Pa. – Sophomore guard
Alli Marcus hit a pair of free throws with 4:32 left to give the Lions the lead for good and the Albright women's basketball team (3-3) won their third straight with a 66-61 victory over the Rowan Profs (2-3) on Saturday afternoon at the Bollman Center.
Albright hit 8-of-11 from the free throw line in the final 4:32 to preserve the victory. Rowan had taken a 57-56 lead after Ayanna Johnson converted a three-point play with 5:20 left.
Marcus had 10 points and was one of four Lions in double figures along with junior center
Zaria Mohamed (18 points, 10 rebounds), junior guard
Hailey Dayton (11 points) and freshman guard
Shaunna Bruker (10 points, 10 rebounds). The double-double for Bruker was her second in as many games after collecting 13 points and 21 rebounds in Tuesday's win at Immaculata.
Dominique Peters had 16 points to pace Rowan, while Johnson added 10 points and four rebounds.
The Profs scored seven of the first eight points in the game and a layup from Olivia Rulon in the final seconds made it a 14-7 game in favor of the visitors after the opening stanza. Albright got hot in the second quarter as they made 8-of-14 from the field. Freshman
Kayana Chisholm hit a layup to kickstart a 14-4 run that was capped by a three-pointer from Marcus to give the Lions their first lead of the day at 21-18 with 5:03 remaining in the first half. Dayton's layup in the final seconds gave Albright a 29-24 lead heading into the locker room.
The two teams traded baskets for much of the third quarter and a late layup from Alexis Kriley brought Rowan within three at 50-47 heading into the fourth quarter. A three from Marcus at the 6:42 mark gave the Lions a 56-51 lead before a quick 6-0 spurt from the Profs capped by Johnson's three-point play gave Rowan the lead for the time being.
Albright shot 19-of-51 (37.3%) from the field, 3-of-10 (30%) from deep and 25-of-48 (52.1%) from the charity stripe, while Rowan was 22-of-64 (34.4%) from the floor, 3-of-19 (15.8%) from deep and 14-of-20 (70%) from the free throw line. The Lions held a 55-38 edge on the boards led by 11 rebounds from freshman
Gabby Boggs and the 10 apiece from Bruker and Mohamed. Peters paced Rowan with seven rebounds.
The Lions open MAC Commonwealth play on Wednesday, Nov. 28 when they head to Lycoming to battle the Warriors at 8 p.m.
