Fourth Quarter Dooms Women's Hoops in Close Loss to FDU-Florham

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Raven Dowling's layup with 1:34 left gave FDU-Florham the lead and the Devils (4-5) rallied for a 57-53 win over the Albright Lions women's basketball team (4-8) on Wednesday night at the St. Pete Classic.

Amina Rauf hit a three with 6:43 left to give Albright a 51-44 lead before Jennah Roman hit a three on the other end to kickstart a 13-2 run for the Devils over the remainder of the game. FDU-Florham outscored the Lions by a 16-7 margin in the fourth quarter.

Junior center Zaria Mohamed had 12 points and nine rebounds to pace Albright, while freshman forward Gabby Boggs came through with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Boggs' classmate Shaunna Bruker came through with seven points and 11 rebounds.

Cayla Staggers paced FDU-Florham with 17 points on 8-of-13 shooting and was joined in double figures by Kayla Croswell (14 points, 11 rebounds) and Dowling (12 points).

A layup from Staggers gave the Devils a 14-6 lead with 3:09 left in the first quarter before Albright closed the quarter on a 6-0 spurt capped by a Boggs layup in the final minute that made it a two-point game. The two sides traded baskets for much of the second quarter and a layup from Rauf gave the Lions the lead with 1:33 to play and they took a 28-25 lead into the locker room.

Croswell's layup at the 7:09 mark of the third quarter brought the Devils within four at 33-29, but an 8-2 Albright run capped by a layup from Boggs gave the Lions a 41-31 edge with 2:55 left in the third. FDU-Florham was able to cut the lead to five at 46-41 heading into the afore-mentioned fourth quarter.

Albright shot 21-of-65 (32.3%) from the floor and 2-of-12 (16.7%) from deep, while FDU-Florham was 24-of-64 (37.5%) from the field and 1-of-9 (11.1%) from beyond the arc. The Lions held a 53-38 edge on the boards led by Bruker's 11 caroms and 10 from Boggs.

The Lions wrap up the St. Pete Classic tomorrow, Thursday, Dec. 20 at 1 p.m. when they battle Montclair State.
