ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Albright Lions women's basketball team (5-8) held Montclair St. to 19 points in the second half en route to a 57-45 victory over the Red Hawks (9-4) on Thursday afternoon at the St. Pete Classic.
The Red Hawks' Alex McKinnon hit a layup to cut the lead to 47-45 with 4:56 left, but Albright's
Dejah Terrell hit a layup on the other end to kickstart a 10-0 run over the remainder of the game. Terrell scored eight of the 10 points during the run.
Terrell paced the Lions with 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting (3-of-5 3PT), while junior center
Zaria Mohamed added 13 points and 13 rebounds and freshman
Gabby Boggs recorded her second straight double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
McKinnon led the way offensively for Montclair State with 20 points on 8-of-14 shooting, while Kayla Bush added seven points and nine rebounds.
The Lions scored eight of the first nine points out of the gate and held an 8-1 lead before the Red Hawks closed the quarter with a 9-4 spurt and a Boggs layup in the final minute gave Albright a 12-10 lead after one quarter. A jumper from Terrell gave head coach
Janice Luck's squad a 22-13 edge with 5:02 left in the first half, but Montclair State answered with a 13-4 run and a jumper from McKinnon tied the game at 26 in the final seconds of the half.
Albright led by as many as seven at one point, but a late spurt from Montclair cut the lead to 38-34 at the end of three. A layup from Boggs with 5:42 left gave the Lions a 47-40 lead before the afore-mentioned runs over the remainder of the contest.
The Lions shot 23-of-58 (39.7%) from the floor and 4-of-9 (44.4%) from deep, while holding the Red Hawks to 32.1% shooting (17-of-53) and 34.8% (8-of-23) from beyond the arc. Albright held a 45-31 edge in rebounding led by the 13 boards from Mohamed and 11 from Boggs.
Albright is back in action on Sunday, Dec. 30 when Ursinus comes to the Bollman Center for a non-conference tilt at 7 p.m.
