Late Goal Lifts Women's Lacrosse over Ursinus, 8-7

READING, Pa. – Junior Sophie Bass scored the eventual game-winning goal for the Albright women's lacrosse team as they rallied to defeat Ursinus by a score of 8-7 on Saturday afternoon in non-conference play.

With the win, the Lions improve to 2-0 overall in the first week of the regular season. This is the first 2-0 start for the Lions since the 2013 season. Meanwhile, the Bears drop to 0-2 overall.

Senior Erin Coleman got things started for the Lions with a goal at the 27:42-mark of the first half off a free position shot to give Albright an early 1-0 lead. The Bears then came back with two straight goals in the span of two minutes to take a 2-1 lead at the 23:17-mark of the first half. The Lions came alive over the next eight minutes as they scored four unanswered goals to take a 5-2 lead at the 15:40-mark of the first half. Sophomore Kelly Baumann would tally a hat trick in that span with three goals all coming off free position shots. Bass scored the third goal in that span off a pass in front from senior Corinne Donohue. Following a timeout, the Bears controlled play for the rest of the half and scored three goals to tie the game at five headed into halftime. Ursinus took advantage of multiple Lions turnovers, and Baumann receiving two yellow cards in the half to be forced to sit the rest of the game.

Ursinus broke through in the second half at the 22:32 mark to take a 6-5 lead, but was quickly countered by Albright on Bass's second goal just after the Bears received a yellow card. Senior Casey Stocker would give the Lions a 7-6 lead with 9:11 left in the game off a pass from Donohue. Ursinus then tied the game at the 4:52-mark, but received a green card for a delay of game just before the draw control took place. Bass took advantage and completed her hat trick with 3:59 left in the game to give the Lions the lead back at 8-7. Much like the home opener on Wednesday, the Lions needed freshman goalkeeper Terae Mason to come up big again on a free position attempt with 22 seconds left. With help from Tristin Konen, the Lions forced a turnover on the attempt and were able to run the clock out to preserve the win.

The Bears held a 28-24 shot advantage for the game, but the Lions held a 13-11 advantage in the second half. Albright held a 27-22 advantage in ground balls and a sizable 12-5 advantage on draw control wins. Ursinus forced 24 Albright turnovers and the Lions forced 16 Bears turnovers for the game.

Bass tallied three goals to finish with seven for the opening week, while tallying seven draw control wins. Baumann finished with three first half goals, and Donohue tallied a pair of assists to finish with eight points for the week. Mason earned the win after making 15 saves on 22 Ursinus shots on goal, while Kaitlyn France suffered the tough loss after making nine saves.

The Lions will return to action on Wednesday, February 28th, when they will travel to face Washington College (Md.) in non-conference action at 7 p.m.
