WLAX Drops Hard Fought Contest to Washington College

SPARKS, Md. – The Albright Lions women's lacrosse team battled back and forth with Washington (Md.) before dropping a tough 10-8 contest to the Shorewoman on Wednesday night at Tierny Field which is on the site of the US Lacrosse headquarters.

With the loss, the Lions drop to 2-1 after picking up a pair of wins last week at home. Meanwhile, this was the first game for the Shorewomen this season.

The Shorewomen started fast as they quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead at the 20:26-mark of the first half. Junior Sophie Bass got the Lions on the board at the 16:41-mark, and would score her second goal of the game at the 6:52-mark of the first half just after Washington scored its third goal a minute earlier. The Shorewomen scored with just 47 seconds left in the first half off a free position shot to make it 4-2, and would extend its lead to 5-2 just 18 seconds into the second half. Albright would come alive to score three straight goals to tie the game at five with 18:39 left in the second half from three different players. Sophomore Kelly Baumann tallied the first goal of the run, and was followed three minutes later by Tristin Konen. Bass then tallied her third goal of the game to tie the game eight minutes after the goal from Konen.

Bass would tally her fourth goal of the game just 13 seconds after the Shorewomen broke the tie at five at the 17:38-mark of the second half off a free position shot. Unfortunately for the Lions, this would be as close as they would get to lead as Washington tallied two straight goals to take an 8-6 lead before ripping off two more goals on free position shots after Konen cut the lead down to 8-7 with 10:46 left in the second half. Senior Corinne Donohue registered the last goal for Albright with 3:17 left in the game.

The Shorewomen held a 32-29 shot advantage for the game, while the Lions held a 24-22 advantage on shots on goal. Washington also held a 21-17 margin in ground balls, and forced 18 turnovers for the Lions. Each team tallied 10 draw control wins in the circle. Bass led the Lions with four goals to increase her team-leading total to 11. Konen tallied two goals, while Baumann and Donohue each posted two points on one goal and one assist. Freshman goalkeeper Terae Mason once again held her own in net with 12 saves despite the loss, while Shorewomen goalkeeper Isabella Richardson made 16 saves in the win. Washington had four players score two goals to lead the offense.

Albright will return to action on Saturday, March 3rd when they will travel to face Stockton in non-conference action at 1 p.m.
