READING, Pa. – The Albright baseball team opened MAC Commonwealth play with a doubleheader at Alvernia on Saturday. The Golden Wolves won both games, defeating the Lions 5-4 in extra innings in game one before winning 8-1 in game two.
In game one, Albright put up single runs in the first, third and fourth innings to take a 3-1 lead after 3.5 innings.
Noah Beebe got things off to a fast start with a two-out double in the top of the first. That scored
Jimmie Gentry to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.
After Alvernia tied the score in the bottom of the first, the Lions retook the lead in the top of the third. Gentry led off the inning by reaching via error, and he moved to second on a passed ball.
Jeff Yordy brought Gentry home on a single up the middle to make it 2-1. The Lions made it 3-1 when
Logan Pennypacker doubled home
Joe Suppa in the top of the fourth. Gentry singled to right, and Pennypacker was thrown out at the plate to end the frame.
Alvernia took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth. Alvernia opened the frame with a pair of doubles to make it 3-2 Albright, and a two-run home pushed the Golden Wolves to a 4-3 advantage.
The Lions tied the score in their last at-bat in the top of the seventh. Pennypacker led off with a single, and he moved up to second on a Gentry sacrifice bunt. After a second out and a wild pitch to move Pennypacker to third, Beebe's infield single tied the score at 4-4.
Alvernia won the game in the bottom of the eighth. A leadoff single and a hit-by-pitch put a runner in scoring position, and a one-out single brought home the winning run in a 5-4 decision.
Beebe led the offensive attack with a 3-for-4 game. Pennypacker, Gentry and
Logan Adams all had two hits.
Pennypacker led off game two with his first career home run, but things unraveled quickly for the Lions. In the bottom of the first, Alvernia scored six runs on five hits, including a two-out, three-run double to cap the scoring in the frame. Alvernia added two more runs in the bottom in the sixth inning.
Suppa and
Jack Shevlin each had two hits to lead the Albright attack.
The teams conclude the series tomorrow at Kelchner Field. The final game of the series begins at 1 p.m.
