READING, Pa. – The Albright Lions women's lacrosse team once again got out to a fast start in the first half, and would hold on to grab a 13-9 win over Lynchburg on Sunday afternoon at Shirk Stadium in non-conference play.
With the win, the Lions pick up their second win in three days to improve to 5-3 overall as MAC Commonwealth play begins in just under two weeks. Meanwhile, the Hornets playing their second game in two days drop to 1-5 on the season overall.
Offense was the name of the game in the first half as both teams combined to score 17 goals in the first 30 minutes of the game. Senior
Sydney Nankervis got the scoring started just 24 seconds into the game to give the Lions an early 1-0 lead. The Hornets would strike back on a free position attempt at the 26:56-mark of the first half to tie the game at 1, but then the Lions began a run of four straight goals to take a 5-1 lead at the 21:38-mark. Senior
Corinne Donohue began the run with a goal just over a minute after the Lynchburg goal, and sophomore
Kelly Baumann followed to extend the Albright lead to 3-1. Sophomore
Devon Mela struck for a goal to make it 4-1 just before junior
Sophie Bass capped the run with a goal immediately following the Lions starting with the ball. The Hornets stopped the run to make it 5-2 just 25 seconds later, but Mela put the Lions back up four just over a minute later for her second goal of the game. The Hornets climbed back into the game with back-to-back goals to make it 6-4 at the 14:48-mark, but the Lions once again responded with two goals of their own from Nankervis and Mela. Lynchburg would make it an 8-5 game at the 10:49-mark of the first half before Albright responded yet again with two more goals from Bass and Baumann that were just 24 seconds apart to bring the score to 10-5. Bass finished the scoring following a Hornets goal with her third goal of the half on a free position shot with 6:17 left in the game to give the Lions an 11-6 lead at halftime.
Lynchburg started the scoring by cutting into the Lions lead with a goal at the 26:52-mark of the second half before Albright answered back again with a goal from Mela just two minutes later to make it a 12-7 game. Freshman
Sarah Springer then extended the Lions lead with a goal following a lucky bounce off a contested pass that initially went to Baumann to make it 13-7 at the 16:25-mark of the second half. Despite the lead, it was the Hornets that controlled play for the majority of the second half as they made one last charge with two goals to bring the Lions lead down to 13-9 with 6:26 left in the game. The Hornets held a 30-29 shot advantage for the game after out-shooting the Lions 19-6 in the second half, and a 24-21 advantage in shots on goal. Lynchburg also held a 24-19 advantage in ground balls, while forcing 20 Lions turnovers. However, the Lions held a 13-9 advantage in draw control wins. Mela led the Lions offense with five points behind four goals and one assist, while Bass added four points behind three goals and one assist in addition to tallying six draw control wins. Baumann posted four points with two goals and two assists, and Nankervis added two goals. Mason earned the win after matching her season-high of 15 saves, while Hornets goalkeeper Chelsea Shultis suffered the loss after making three saves in 15:12 minutes of play.
Albright will return to action on Thursday, March 29
th as they will open MAC Commonwealth play against Hood for a 4 p.m. start.
