READING, Pa. – The Albright Lions women's lacrosse team saw seven players scored multiple goals in its MAC Commonwealth opener against Hood as they dominated their way to a 19-4 victory on Thursday afternoon at Shirk Stadium.
With their third straight win, the Lions improve to 6-3 on the season and 1-0 in MAC Commonwealth play. Meanwhile, the Blazers drop to 5-4 on the season overall with a 0-1 record in conference play.
The Lions controlled play early but misfired on their first four shot attempts. Junior
Sophie Bass then got the scoring going with a free position shot goal at the 23:33-mark of the first half. Sophomore
Devon Mela then added to the Lions lead a minute later with another free position shot goal, and the Blazers countered just over a minute later with a free position shot goal of their own to make it 2-1. That would be as close as the Blazers would get for the rest of the game as the Lions strung together six straight goals to take an 8-1 lead at the 7:59-mark of the first half. Sophomore
Kelly Baumann scored the next three Lions goals before Mela would add the next two. Baumann then concluded the six goal run with her fourth of the game off a pass from Mela. Following a second Hood free position shot goal, freshman
Tristin Konen got in on the scoring with two straight goals to bring the Lions lead to 10-2 with 58 seconds left in the half. Bass closed out the dominant first half with a free position shot goal with 28 seconds left in the first half to make it 11-2 Albright at halftime.
Albright continued its strong offensive showing by scoring the first five goals of the second half to take a 16-2 lead. Bass once again started the scoring in the new half with a goal at the 27:17-mark, and was followed by senior
Sydney Nankervis just under two minutes later off a free position shot. Nankervis played a role in three straight goals during the run as she assisted on the following goal from freshman
Sarah Springer before tallying another goal on a free position shot. Konen would cap the run with her third goal of the game off a pass from senior
Corinne Donohue. Bass then answered a Blazers goal at the 8:56-mark of the second half, and Springer added her second goal of the game at the 5:38-mark on a pass from behind the net from senior
Erin Coleman. Bass would close the Lions scoring with 3:17 left in the game.
The Lions held a staggering 36-14 shot advantage for the game, and a 28-11 advantage in shots on goal. Albright held a 14-12 advantage in ground balls, and slight 13-12 advantage in draw control wins. Bass led the offensive barrage with seven points behind five goals and two assists, and Baumann (four goals, two assists) and Mela (three goals, three assists) each posted six points. Nankervis tallied three points behind two goals and one assist in addition to having a team-high seven draw control wins. Konen registered three goals, and Donohue added three assists. Freshman goalkeeper
Terae Mason earned the win after making seven saves and allowing just four goals, while Hood goalkeeper Rylie Benoit-Nobis suffered the loss after making nine saves.
Albright will return to action on Wednesday, April 4
th, when they will travel to face Stevenson in MAC Commonwealth play at 7 p.m.
