STEVENSON, Md. – The Albright Lions women's lacrosse team dropped a heartbreaking 8-7 contest to Stevenson in MAC Commonwealth play on Wednesday night after allowing two goals in the final 1:45.
The loss snaps a three game win streak for the Lions as their record moves to 6-4 overall with a 1-1 mark in MAC Commonwealth play. Meanwhile, the Mustangs improve to 4-6 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
Both defenses started out strong early as the game remained scoreless until the 23:37-mark when senior
Casey Stocker got the Lions on the board to take an early 1-0 lead. Stevenson responded three minutes later at the 20:43-mark to tie the game at 1, but sophomore
Devon Mela came back 38 seconds later with a goal to give the Lions a 2-1 lead. The Mustangs would score three straight goals in the final 12 minutes of the half to take a 4-2 lead at halftime.
Stevenson opened the scoring in the second half at the 23:06-mark to extend its lead to 5-2, but then the Lions came storming back with four unanswered goals to take a 6-5 lead. Sophomore
Kelly Baumann scored the first two goals within three minutes of each other before freshman Tristan Konen tied the game on a free position shot at the 17:56-mark. Senior
Sydney Nankervis then gave the Lions the lead on another free position shot goal at the 14:51-mark. The Mustangs tied the game at six at the 11:48-mark, but junior
Sophie Bass gave the Lions the lead back just over a minute later at the 10:23-mark on a third free position shot goal. Albright then tried to fight off the Mustangs as freshman goalkeeper
Terae Mason made two free position shot saves which put the Lions on the brink of a win with just over two minutes left. However, the Lions were handed two yellow cards within the final two minutes of the game to give the Mustangs multiple chances. Following the first one, Stevenson missed the free position shot wide before Mason made a save. Stevenson was able to grab the ground ball following the save which led to the game-tying goal with 1:45 left. The Mustangs won the following draw control which then led to the second Lions yellow card with 44 seconds left. Stevenson cashed in on the free position shot and escaped with the win.
The Mustangs held a slight 21-17 shot advantage for the game, and a 16-12 advantage in shots on goal. Stevenson also held an 8-7 advantage in draw controls, and the Lions held a 16-14 advantage in ground balls. Six different Lions scored goals, with Baumann leading the way with three points behind two goals and one assist. Senior
Alyssa Porreca caused a team-high three turnovers and picked up four ground balls. Mason made eight saves in the loss, while Mustangs goalie Mack Ferguson made five saves.
The Lions will return to action on Saturday, April 7
th when they will host Arcadia in MAC Commonwealth play at noon.
