Huge Second Half Propels WLAX over Arcadia, 21-12

READING, Pa. – Behind 13 second half goals, the Albright Lions women's lacrosse team stormed away from Arcadia to earn a 21-12 victory on Friday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth play at Shirk Stadium.

With the win, the Lions improve to 7-4 overall with a 2-1 record in MAC Commonwealth play. The 21 goals were the most scored by the Lions since they netted 22 against Virginia Wesleyan in 2016. Meanwhile, the Knights fall to 6-4 overall with a 1-2 record in conference play.

Each offense came out strong as the game went back and forth for the majority of the first half. Junior Sophie Bass opened the scoring just 35 seconds into the game on a free position shot goal to give the Lions the initial 1-0 lead. Arcadia struck back under a minute later to tie the game at one, but the Lions struck back at the 26:04-mark on a free position shot goal from sophomore Kelly Baumann. The Knights answered back again just under a minute later to tie the game at two before Albright took the lead right back on a goal from senior Sydney Nankervis at the 19:54-mark. The scoring continued with a free position shot goal from the Knights at the 18:12-mark to tie the game at three, but yet again the Lions responded with Baumann's second goal of the game at the 16:19-mark to retake the lead a 4-3. Baumann cashed in on another free position shot goal at the 13:32-mark just under a minute after the Knights tied the game at four, and was followed by another goal from Bass at the 10:25-mark to give the Lions a 6-4 lead. Bass struck for the third time in the half at the 6:44-mark, and would score her fourth goal on another free position shot at the 1:11-mark after the Knights cut the lead to 7-5. Arcadia then finished the half strong with two goals in the final minute to cut the Lions lead down to 8-7 at halftime.

Sophomore Devon Mela opened the scoring for the Lions in the second half with a goal just 41 seconds in to give the Lions a 9-7 lead, but the Knights countered once again 40 seconds later to make it 9-8. Albright then posted back-to-back goals from Bass and Mela to make it 11-8 at the 25:07-mark of the second half. The Knights responded with back-to-back goals on free position shots to make it a one goal game again at 11-10. Following another set of response goals to bring the score to 12-11, the Lions put the game away with six unanswered goals to take an 18-11 lead with 5:07 left in the game. Bass started the run with a goal at the 13:04-mar after receiving a pass from senior Corinne Donohue, and Baumann tallied the second goal in the run just two minutes later. Nankervis made it 15-11 at the 9:36-mark, and Bass continued her huge game with a goal just nine seconds later after snatching the ball from the draw control. Baumann scored the fifth goal of the run at the 6:22-mark, and Donohue after dishing out four assists prior, tallied her first goal of the game to complete the run. The Lions finished off the dominant second half by tallying three more goals from Bass, Nankervis, and Mela to bring the final to 21-12.

The Lions tallied a season-high 46 shots to outshoot the Knights 46-28 overall, and 35-22 in shots on goal. Albright also held a 30-23 advantage in ground balls, and forced 27 Knights turnovers. Arcadia held a 19-15 advantage in draw control wins. Bass led the offense with a career-high eight goals and added six draw control wins as well. Baumann registered seven points behind five goals and two assists, and Donohue fell an assist shy of tying the single game assists record with five in addition to one goal. Mela posted five points behind three goals and two assists, and Nankervis tallied four goals in the win. Freshman goalkeeper Terae Mason made 10 saves in the full 60 minutes, while Knights goalkeeper Molly Naylor made 14 saves in the loss. Allegra Benites led the Knights with six goals.
