Women's Lacrosse Outlasts Elizabethtown, 14-11

READING, Pa. – Facing a one goal deficit, the Albright women's lacrosse team outscored Elizabethtown 5-1 down the stretch in the second half to earn a 14-11 non-conference win on Wednesday afternoon at Shirk Stadium.

With the win, the Lions improve to 8-4 on the season and hold their MAC Commonwealth play record at 2-1. Meanwhile, the Blue Jays of the Landmark Conference drop to 6-6 overall.

The Lions started out fast in the contest as they tallied the first two goals to take an early 2-0 lead at the 24:44-mark of the first half. Senior Casey Stocker got Albright on the board two minutes into the game with a goal before sophomore Devon Mela followed with a free position shot goal four minutes later. The Blue Jays then responded with three straight goals to take a 3-2 lead at the 20:56-mark of the first half which sent the game into a back and forth affair. Mela continued to dominate the first half by scoring the Lions next two goals to help them retake the lead at 4-3 at the 14:39-mark. Following a Blue Jay goal just over a minute later, sophomore Kelly Baumann gave the Lions the lead back with a goal on a pass from junior Sophie Bass. Baumann then responded to another Elizabethtown goal at the 9:22-mark of the first half before the Blue Jays countered with back-to-back goals to take a 7-6 lead with 4:52 left in the first half. Albright came back again with back-to-back goals of their own to take an 8-7 lead at halftime following a rocket from Stocker, and a free position shot goal from senior Sydney Nankervis.

Baumann then started the second half strong for the Lions by giving them a 9-7 lead just 1:45 into the second half with her third goal of the game. However, the Blue Jays countered with three straight goals in a span of four minutes to take a 10-9 lead at the 22:25-mark of the second half. Freshman Tristin Konen then jumpstarted the Lions rally with a goal to tie the game at 10 at the 16:15-mark, and Stocker posted her third goal of the game to give Albright the lead for good at the 12:32-mark. Baumann would extend the Lions lead at the 9:19-mark on a pass from freshman Sarah Springer, and Bass continued the run with her first two goals of the game back-to-back to bring the lead to 14-10 with 4:08 left in the game. Elizabethtown would score one more goal with 3:18 left, but the Lions defense forced three Blue Jay turnovers to preserve the win.

The Lions held a slight 35-34 advantage in shots for the game, but the Blue Jays held a 26-23 edge on shots on goal. Albright also held a 28-22 advantage in ground balls, and the Blue Jays held a slight 15-11 edge in draw control wins. Baumann led the offense with four goals, while Mela added four points behind three goals and one assist. Bass posted three points behind the two late game goals with one assist, and Stocker tallied the first hat trick of her career with three goals. Senior Corinne Donohue also picked up a pair of assists to move within three of setting a new Lions single-season record for assists. Freshman goalkeeper Terae Mason matched her season-high of 15 saves on 26 shots faced to earn the win, while Blue Jays goalkeeper Abby Kopytko made nine saves in the loss. Katie Thompson, the NCAA Division III leader in assists, led the Blue Jays with six points behind four assists and two goals.
