Gerenda Spins One Hitter as Softball Splits with Widener

READING, Pa. – Senior starting pitcher Riley Gerenda carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning of the Albright softball team's 1-0 victory over Widener in the first game of a doubleheader on Thursday afternoon. Widener came back to win game two, 8-5.

Albright got the only run of the first game in its half of the third inning. Jordan Chell led off with a walk, and she moved to second on Kelly Cembrale's sacrifice bunt. After Brooke Yerger walked, Stephany Courtney brought Chell home with an RBI single to center field.

Gerenda was fully in charge of game one. She retired the first 11 batters she faced before allowing a walk with two outs in the fourth inning, and she also escaped a pair of walks in the fifth inning with the no-hitter and shutout intact.

Widener finally got a hit on a flare to left field with two away in the top of the sixth inning. Gerenda finished game one with a complete-game shutout, allowing just the one hit and four walks while fanning four.

The Lions sent 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first inning of game two, scoring five runs. Albright put four on the board before Widener could record an out.

Singles by Yerger and Camille Sears sandwiches a walk to Courtney to load the bases. Stephanie Pomante blasted a grand slam to left field to give the Lions a very early 4-0 lead.

Albright reloaded the bases in the first inning. Kaitlyn Chell singled after an out, and Regina Milburn was hit by a pitch. After the second out, Cembrale reached on an infield single to load the bases again. Yerger reached on an error to allow Chell to score to make it 5-0 Albright in the first.

The score stayed 5-0 until the fifth inning. Widener cut into the lead with a pair of two-out, RBI hits to make it 5-2 Lions. After Widener got an unearned run in the top of the sixth to make it 5-3, the Pride mounted a comeback in their last at-bat to score five times in the top of the seventh. That rounded out the scoring to give Widener an 8-5 victory.

Yerger, Kaitlyn Chell and Cembrale all had two hits for the Lions in game two. Gerenda allowed three runs, two earned, while striking out four and walking one in a no-decision.

Albright continues its homestand with a non-conference doubleheader against York (Pa.) on Monday at 3 p.m.
