Offense Leads Baseball over Delaware Valley, 17-9

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – The Albright Lions jumped out to an early 13-0 lead over Delaware Valley on Tuesday afternoon, and cruised from there as they won 17-9 in non-conference play.

With the win, the Lions improve to 10-10 overall and have now won three of their last four games. Meanwhile, the Aggies drop to 7-10 overall.

The Lions got the scoring going in the top of the second when seniors Noah Beebe and Tanner Brescancine drew back-to-back walks to start the inning. Following a sacrifice bunt, sophomore Brandon Daubert drew another walk to load the bases, and Albright would score in the next at-bat. Senior Zach Krause hit a ball into the outfield that turned into a fielder's choice when the Aggie left fielder threw to third base to get Brescancine out, but Beebe still was able to score. The Lions then broke the game open in the top of the third when they scored eight runs on five hits and two errors to take a 9-0 lead. The big inning started when sophomore Logan Pennypacker led off the inning with a single and a stolen base. Classmate Jimmy Gentry then singled to score Pennypacker, and would advance the third when classmate Logan Adams singled in the next at-bat. Gentry then scored one batter later Beebe on an error by the Aggie third baseman. Following a balk which put runners on second and third, the Lions scored again after back-to-back walks from Brescancine and junior Jesse Fikslin. Two more Lions would come across to score on an error by the Aggie shortstop, and then on a sacrifice fly from Krause to make it 6-0. Junior Austin Roth then followed with a two-run single, and Gentry finished the inning with his second hit of the inning on an RBI single.

The scoring continued in the top of the fourth when the Lions stretched their lead out to 12-0 on two hits and two errors. Albright started the inning by loading the bases on two singles and a walk, and the first run then came around to score on a wild pitch. Roth then reached on an error to score the second run of the inning before Pennypacker added the third run the following at-bat on a failed double play attempt. A trio of hit by pitches started the next scoring chance for Albright in the top of the fifth, and the 13th run would score on a fielder's choice following another failed double play attempt. Delaware Valley finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth after they scored five runs on five hits and one error to make it a 13-5 game. The Lions would respond in the top of the sixth on a two-out RBI single from sophomore Will Tokarski to make it 14-5 after Adams and Beebe drew consecutive walks. The Aggies then tallied a run in the bottom of the seventh on a two-out RBI single to make it 14-6, before scoring three more runs in the bottom of the eighth to make it 14-9 on a bases loaded walk, and a Lions error. Albright put a cap on the big offensive showing by responding with three more runs in the top of the ninth on four hits and one error. Pennypacker added an RBI on a sacrifice fly after Krause doubled and freshman Evan Cardinal singled. With two outs, Tokarski finished the scoring with a two-run single to score Adams and Cardinal following an error.

Nine Lions tallied hits on the afternoon with three players tallying multiple hits. Tokarski went 2-of-3 with two RBIs after entering the game in the fifth inning, and Adams went 2-of-5 with three runs scored and two walks. Gentry went 2-of-7 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Krause and Roth each tallied three RBIs in the win. As a team, the Lions drew a season-high 13 walks and struck out only twice.

Freshman Ryan Kalinich earned his second win of the season after throwing four shutout innings, while allowing just four hits. Fikslin tossed three innings in relief and allowed four runs (all unearned) on five hits, and Krause closed the game out in the ninth with a scoreless frame in addition to picking up two strikeouts. Aggies starter Jesse Milza was saddled with the loss after allowing five runs (three earned) on three hits and three walks in two innings of work.

Albright will return to action tomorrow, April 11th when they will travel to face Lebanon Valley in a single MAC Commonwealth game at 3:30 p.m.
