AMBLER, Pa. – The Albright Lions baseball team was unable to overcome a 23-hit outburst from Arcadia as the Knights defeated the Lions 16-10 in MAC Commonwealth play on Friday afternoon.
With the loss, the Lions drop to 10-12 overall with a 4-9 record in MAC Commonwealth play. Meanwhile, the defending MAC Commonwealth champion Knights improve to 17-8 overall with an 8-3 record in conference play.
The first inning saw a combined nine runs scored on 10 hits between both teams to start the high-scoring contest. Albright had its first four batters reach base, and took an early 2-0 lead after junior
Jeff Yordy doubled down the left field line to score sophomores
Logan Adams and Jimmy Gentry. With two outs, sophomore
Logan Pennypacker came through with a two-run triple to give the Lions a 4-0 lead. The Knights then responded with five runs of their own on six hits behind a two-run single to take a 5-4 lead after the first inning. Yordy would respond to the Knights big half inning in the top of the second with a two-run home run with two outs to give Albright the lead back at 6-5. Following a scoreless inning from each team, the Knights then tied the game at six on a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the third. Arcadia would get another solo home run to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning before adding three more runs on five hits to take a 10-6 lead over the Lions. Tanner Brescancine roped a two-run triple to centerfield to bring the score to 10-8.
The game then swung completely in favor of the Knights in the bottom of the sixth when the Knights tallied three runs to take a 13-8 lead after the Lions recorded the first two outs of the inning. Arcadia got a two-run single following a single, walk, and a double steal before the third run scored on a throwing error. The Knights would finish their scoring with more two out magic in the seventh as they got a two-run double to make it 15-8. Arcadia then scored their final run on a sacrifice fly following a triple to begin the bottom of the eighth inning. The Lions had leadoff doubles in the seventh and eighth innings, but could not do anything with either of them. Senior
Noah Beebe cut the Knights lead down to six as he hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot, after Yordy reached first base on an error to lead off the top of the ninth. Arcadia then closed the game by retiring the next three Lions batters.
Yordy led the offense by going 3-of-4 from the plate and tallied four RBIs in addition to scoring four runs. Beebe went 2-of-3 with a pair of RBIs off the home run, and came around to score three runs. Adams tallied two hits and Brescancine and Pennypacker each tallied two RBIs in the loss. Shaun O'Reilly was saddled with the loss after being charged with nine runs (all earned) on 12 hits and three walks in three innings of work. Sophomore
Will Tokarski relieved O'Reilly and gave up six runs (five earned) on eight hits, while tallying two strikeouts in 3.2 innings. Freshman
Ryan Kalinich then pitched 1.1 innings and surrendered one earn run on three hits. Arcadia starting pitcher Joel Bartoni earned the win despite giving up eight earned runs in five innings, and Sean Carew led the Knights offense by going 4-of-5 from the plate with three RBIs.
The Lions will return to action tomorrow, April 14
th, when they will conclude its MAC Commonwealth series with Arcadia with a doubleheader at Kelchner Field beginning at noon.
