Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Baumann, Mela lead WLAX Over Lycoming, 19-8

READING, Pa. – Behind two players scoring six goals, the Albright Lions women's lacrosse team picked up its fourth straight win as they triumphed over Lycoming 19-8 on Wednesday afternoon at Shirk Stadium.

With the win, the Lions keep pace in the MAC Commonwealth race for first place by improving to 10-4 overall and 4-1 in MAC Commonwealth play. Meanwhile, the Warriors drop to 5-9 overall with a 2-4 record in conference play.

The early portion of the contest seemed to script a back and forth affair as the teams traded four goals each in just over the first seven minutes of the game. Sophomore Kelly Baumann started the scoring just 24 seconds into the game by tallying the Lions first goal just after winning the opening draw control. Lycoming wasted little time tying the game as they responded just 15 seconds later with a goal to draw even at one. The Warriors then struck again quickly to take their first lead of the game at 2-1 just 43 seconds later. Sophomore Devon Mela continued the early goal scoring barrage just over a minute later with her first goal of the game to tie the game at the 27:14-mark before tallying a second goal at the 24:25-mark to give the Lions a 3-2 lead. The Warriors would score again to tie the game at three at the 24:36-mark, but Baumann gave Albright the lead back in the blink of an eye as she scored just 11 seconds after the draw control. The Warriors tied the game for the final time at the 22:48-mark on a free position shot before the Lions ran off eight unanswered goals to close out the first half. Mela gave the Lions the lead for good 41 seconds after the fourth Lycoming goal, and senior Sydney Nankervis added to the lead at the 17:14-mark on a free position shot goal. Mela's fourth goal of the first half would give the Lions a 7-4 lead at the 15:06-mark before she once again tallied back-to-back goals as she scored at the 9:48-mark to make it 8-4. Baumann then scored the Lions next three goals to make it 11-4, and senior Casey Stocker capped the first half scoring by scoring her first goal of the game with 48 seconds left before halftime.

Lycoming broke their scoring drought just 53 seconds into the second half to cut the Lions lead down to 12-5, but Albright quickly responded with two goals just 29 seconds apart to move back up 14-5. Nankervis tallied the first one on a free position shot and Mela scored the second one to finish off her highest goal total of the season. The Warriors made it 14-6 just 47 seconds after Mela's goal, but junior Sophie Bass scored on a free position shot 27 seconds later to bring the score to 15-6. Bass then tallied her second straight goal at the 22:27-mark of the second half to give the Lions their first double-digit goal lead at 16-6. Following a Lycoming goal on a free position shot, the Lions tallied two more goals from Baumann at the 14:15-mark and senior Corinne Donohue at the 12:57-mark to make it an 18-7 game. Bass would then finish off the Lions scoring by completing her hat trick with 1:02 left in the game.

The Lions outshot the Warriors 38-29 overall, and 29-22 on shots on goal. Albright also held a 19-15 advantage in ground balls, but the Warriors held a sizable 20-8 advantage in draw control wins behind 11 coming from Kelly McGinniss. Baumann and Mela each tallied six goals with Baumann leading the way with seven points thanks to an assist. Bass tallied three second half goals and Nankervis finished with three points on two goals and one assist. Freshman goalkeeper Terae Mason posted another solid game in net by making 14 saves on 22 shots faced to earn the win, while Warriors goalkeeper Bailey Parchesky made 10 saves in the loss.

Albright will return to action on Saturday, April 21st when they will take on MAC Commonwealth leading #12 Messiah at 1 p.m.
