READING, Pa. – The Albright Lions women's lacrosse team locked up a berth in the MAC Commonwealth Tournament with a 16-6 win over Widener on a rainy Wednesday night at Shirk Stadium.
With the win, the Lions improve to 11-5 overall with a 5-2 record in MAC Commonwealth play. The 11 wins match the single season record for wins in a season set by the 2016 team. Meanwhile, the Pride fall to 5-11 overall with a 2-5 record in conference play.
It took just 23 seconds until the Lions opened the scoring as junior
Sophie Bass scored her first goal in what would become another big game to give Albright an early 1-0 lead. Bass then struck again at the 28:32-mark to quickly bring the Lions advantage to 2-0. Freshman
Tristin Konen would continue the fast start for the Lions with a goal at the 26:45-mark to make it 3-0 after collecting a rebound off a previous shot. The Pride scored their first goal of the game at the 25 minute mark, before Konen answered with her second goal off a free position shot at the 21:03-mark to put the Lions up 4-1. Widener answered again to make it a two goal game, but would get no further as senior
Sydney Nankervis scored to make it 5-2 at the 17:56-mark. The Pride cut the Lions lead back down to two with a goal at the 15:52-mark before sophomore
Devon Mela reestablished Albright's three goal lead with a free position shot goal just 30 seconds later. Bass tallied her third goal of the game at the 12:08-mark of the first half to bring the Lions lead out to four at 7-3. The Pride continued to hang around with a goal at the 8:17-mark, but the Lions got a free position shot goal from sophomore
Kelly Baumann to make it a four goal advantage into halftime at 8-4.
A pair of free position shot goals from Bass and Baumann in the opening two minutes of the second half helped the Lions extend its lead out to 10-4 at the 28 minute mark. Bass and Baumann each then added another free position shot goal to make it a 12-4 game before the Pride ended the run with a goal at the 18:37-mark. Baumann would tally her fourth free position shot goal of the game at the 17:20-mark to make it 13-5, and Konen tallied her third goal of the game at the 10:46-mark to make it 14-6 after the Pride posted a free position shot goal at the 16:45-mark. Bass would close out the game with the Lions final two goals of the game to bring her total up to seven on the night.
The Lions outshot the Pride 39-23 overall, and 29-16 in shots on goal. The Pride had advantages in ground balls at 18-17 and draw control wins at 13-11, but the Lions forced 22 Widener turnovers. Terae Mason made 10 saves to earn the win, and set a new single-season record for wins by a goalie with 11. Pride goalkeeper Katie Hayes suffered the loss after making 13 saves in the full 60 minutes, while Kelly Lynch posted five points behind three goals and two assists.
Albright will play its regular season finale on Saturday, April 28
th when they will travel to face Lebanon Valley at 1 p.m. A win over the Dutchmen would give the Lions the No. 2 seed in the MAC Commonwealth Tournament.
