READING, Pa. – The Albright Lions women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 straight set contest to Arcadia in MAC Commonwealth play on Tuesday night at the Bollman Center.
With the loss, the Lions fall to 3-2 overall and 0-2 in MAC Commonwealth play. Meanwhile, the Knights improve to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
Sophomore
Damaris Gomez registered double-digit kills for the third straight game after tallying a game-high of 11. Gomez also tallied five digs and one service ace on the evening. Classmate
Kaitlyn Chell recorded a game-high 17 digs along with tallying five assists, three kills, and two service aces. Senior
Becca Davis added 12 kills for the Lions while sophomore
Alexa Poss paced the offense with 17 assists.
The teams went back and forth for the first portion of the match to leave the score tied at six. Arcadia would then win four of the next five points to take a 10-7 lead, and would later extend its lead out to 15-9 following a service ace. Two errors from the Knights brought the first set down to 15-11, but that was as close as the Lions would get to Arcadia in the first set. The Knights stretched their lead out to 20-12 before winning the last four points to take the set at 25-15.
Albright came out extremely hot in the second set by taking the first five points behind three kills, and would force the Knights to take a timeout. The Lions continued to dominate to start in the second set and would extend its lead out to 10-2. However, the Knights fought back to win six of the next seven points to cut the Lions lead down to 11-8. Arcadia then went on another run of winning six of the next seven points after a kill from Poss to take a 14-13 lead. A service error then re-tied the set at 14 before the Knights won three straight points to take a 17-14 lead. Arcadia did not relinquish the lead for the rest of the set as they won the final eight of the last 11 points to win the second set.
The Lions started well again to start the third set by taking a 3-0 lead, but the Knights immediately came back with three straight points of their own. Both teams traded the next few points to leave the score tied at six before the Knights won four straight points to take a 10-6 lead. After the Knights stretched their lead out to 16-9, back-to-back kills from Chell and Gomez brought the lead down to 16-11. The Lions made one last charge by working the Knights lead down to as close as three at 20-17, but Arcadia would close the match out with the final five straight points to seal the win.
Arcadia finished the match by hitting .316 while the Lions were held to hitting just .012. The Knights also registered 38 kills to the Lions 21, and tallied nine service aces on the evening to the Lions four. Katie Wilson led the Knights with nine kills and Julia Paliwodzinski paced the offense with 27 assists.
Albright will return to action on Thursday, September 13
th when they will travel to face Gwynedd Mercy in non-conference action at 6 p.m.
