READING, Pa. – Behind two early first half goals, the Albright Lions snapped a three-game losing streak as they beat Wesley 3-0 in non-conference action at Shirk Stadium on Wednesday night.
With the win, the Lions improve to 2-3 overall and have defeated Wesley in the last two seasons. Meanwhile, the Wolverines suffer their first loss of the season as they fall to 4-1 overall.
The Lions took control early on in the game as they created some early chances in the first few minutes. Sophomore
Nicole Crumling scored the first goal of her collegiate career after she pushed the ball past the goalkeeper after an initial blast from classmate
Bailey Lehman off a penalty corner. The Lions continued to pounce early and added to their lead in the 16
th minute after sophomore
Jennifer Crumling scored her second goal of the season after deflecting the ball in front of the net off an initial shot from senior
Lindsey Hecker. Albright outshot the Wolverines 8-3 in the first half and nearly added to its lead in the 26
th minute when junior
Kaley Donmoyer had a hard shot just rattle off the post. Wesley then almost got on the board in the 34
th minute when they created a 2-0 breakaway, but the Lions defense quickly closed and junior
Kyra Scerbo made a defensive safe to keep the Wolverines off the scoreboard.
Albright played strong defense in the second half as they limited chances from the Wolverines early on. Following a Wolverine timeout, Wesley began making its first big push of the night with a couple scoring chances. Wesley had three shots go on net but all were saved by Lions goalkeeper
Aileen Taylor. The Lions would put away the game late as senior
Annette Helmandollar capped off the win with her second goal of the season with just 1:01 left in the game.
The Lions outshot the Wolverines 14-7 overall and 9-4 in shots on goal. Albright also had a slight 6-5 edge in penalty corner opportunities as well. Taylor made three saves to earn her first win of the season and registered the 14
th shutout of her career. She needs one more shutout to tie the program record for career shutouts that is held by
Marguerite DeLucas. The Wolverines had two goalkeepers play 35 minutes each with Sidney Knott suffering the loss after starting the game and making two saves.
Albright will return to action on Saturday, September 15
th when they will travel to face York (Pa.) at 12 p.m.
