READING, Pa. – The Albright Lions women's volleyball team pulled out a 3-1 win over Cedar Crest on Saturday morning at the Bollman Center in non-conference action.
With the win, the Lions snap a two-game losing streak and improve to 4-3 overall. Meanwhile, the Falcons see their five-game winning streak snapped as they fall to 5-2 overall.
Sophomore
Damaris Gomez led the Lions with a game-high 11 kills and added a season-high 15 digs, while classmate
Liz Bacovin registered a season-high nine kills. Sophomore
Kaitlyn Chell posted a game-high 26 digs and seven kills and senior
Becca Davis matched her number of digs with 26 as well. Sophomore
Alexa Poss paced the Lions offense with 26 assists in addition to adding 10 digs.
The Lions jumped out to an early lead in set one before the Falcons closed in to make it a 7-5 game. Albright worked its way out to an 11-7 advantage until Cedar Crest fought back with four straight points to tie the game at 11. Both teams would trade runs of three straight points before the Lions registered five-straight points to take a 19-14 lead. A Cedar Crest rally forced a Lions timeout with the score at 20-19, and the Falcons would eventually look to steal the set after they took a 23-22 lead. Albright then received back-to-back points to reach set point, but a service error would force extra points. Fortunately for the Lions, they survived against a set point situation to win the final three points and take a thrilling first set.
Both teams used small runs to begin the second set as the score sat initially sat tied at seven. The Falcons then won six of the next nine points to take a 13-10 lead before the Lions struck back with three straight points to tie the set at 13. The Falcons then worked their way out to an 18-14 lead and would not let their deficit get under three points for the rest of the second set. After dropping the second set, Albright came out firing in the third set to take a 6-1 lead and force a Falcon timeout. Cedar Crest then ran off five straight points to tie the set at six, and set off a few rounds of back-and-forth action. The Falcons eventually took the lead and worked their way out to a 14-11 advantage before the Lions won five of the next six points to take the lead back at 16-15. With the Falcons up 18-17, Albright won six of the next seven points to take a 23-19 lead and force a Falcon timeout Cedar Crest fought back to tie the second set at 23 before the Lions pulled out the set with a kill from sophomore
Brooke Franklin.
The Lions started out strong yet again and took an early 6-1 lead in the fourth before the Falcons countered with five-straight points to tie the set at six. Cedar Crest eventually worked its way out to a 12-10 lead, but the Lions ran off five-straight points off errors to take a 15-12 lead. Cedar Crest then got five-straight points of its own to take the lead back at 17-15 before the Lions won three of the next four points to go up 19-18. The Falcons went up 23-22 looking to force a fifth set, but a trio of attack errors ended the match for the Lions.
Albright will return to action on Monday, September 17
th when they will face Penn State Berks on the road at 7 p.m.
