NEWARK, N.J. – Four second half goals broke the game open and the Albright Lions men's soccer team (1-5-1) dropped their third straight with a 5-0 loss to Rutgers-Newark (4-3-1) on Wednesday night at Frederick Douglass Field in Newark.
Kelvin Opoku got the scoring started for the Scarlet Raiders in the 43
rd minute as he broke free on a counterattack following an Albright corner kick to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. Rutgers-Newark held a 17-6 shot advantage in the opening stanza.
In the 58
th minute, Adonis Scotland took a feed from Brandon Parada with a through ball to get the second half scoring started for the Scarlet Raiders. They would go on to strike for three goals in the final 10 minutes of the game including Franco Catania's team-leading eighth goal in the 81
st minute.
Rutgers-Newark outshot the Lions by a 28-6 margin including a 14-1 edge in shots on target. Junior
Eric Adamo recorded a pair of shots to pace Albright, while Catania and Pape Taha had four shots apiece for the Scarlet Raiders.
Sophomore
Brendan Hanratty recorded eight saves in net for Albright, while Rutgers-Newark keeper Christian Andrach had one save.
The Lions return home to host Gwynedd Mercy on Saturday afternoon at Shirk Stadium. Opening kick is set for 1 p.m.
