Field Hockey Suffers Heartbreaking Overtime Loss at Stockton

PONOMA, N.J. – The Albright field hockey team suffered a 2-1 heartbreaking loss on Sunday afternoon to Stockton in non-conference action. The Ospreys tied the game with 54 seconds in regulation before scoring the game winner 1:50 into overtime.

With the loss, the Lions drop to 1-1 after tallying a win in their season opener on Saturday morning. Meanwhile, the Ospreys improve to 2-0 after now defeating a pair of MAC Commonwealth teams to open the season (Arcadia, Albright).

Both teams traded chances in the first portion of the game as the Lions received five penalty corners in the first 15 minutes of the game. Albright broke through in the 20th minute to take 1-0 after sophomore Bailey Lehman scored her first goal of the season on a penalty stroke goal. The Lions continued to pounce after the goal as they nearly extended their lead in the 25th minute on back-to-back chances from senior Annette Helmandollar and Kaley Donmoyer. Senior goalkeeper Aileen Taylor closed out the half with a pair of saves to keep the Lions lead at 1-0.

After out-shooting the Ospreys 10-6 in the first half, the Lions could not gain any momentum in the second half. Stockton controlled play in the second half and received 13 penalty corner opportunities. However, the Lions defense stood tall throughout by limiting the Ospreys in shots on goal with the numerous penalty corners. Stockton had a chance to tie the game in the 64th minute on a penalty stroke opportunity, but the shot went wide of the net to keep the Lions in front. However, the Ospreys did finally convert with 54 seconds left in regulation on a backhand in front of the net after a mad scramble from a penalty corner. The Ospreys then wasted little time in the extra period and scored off a rebound in the 72nd minute of the game to seal the comeback win.

The Ospreys held a 16-10 shot advantage for the game after out-shooting the Lions 11-1 in the second half and in overtime. Stockton also held an 18-6 advantage in penalty corners as well. Taylor suffered the hard-luck loss after making six saves and allowing two goals. Ospreys goalie Emily Gilligan picked up the win after making seven saves in the win.

The Lions will return to action on Wednesday, September 5th as they will travel to face Delaware Valley in non-conference action at 4 p.m.
