Becca Davis recorded her 1,00th dig as the Albright women's volleyball team was swept in straight sets by Lycoming on Tuesday night in MAC Commonwealth play at the Bollman Center.
With the loss, the Lions drop to 5-6 on the season overall and 0-4 in MAC Commonwealth play. Meanwhile, the Warriors improve to 9-6 overall and 3-2 in conference play.
Davis led the Lions on defense with a team-high 19 digs and posted one assist as well. Sophomore
Kaitlyn Chell tallied a team-high eight kills and added seven digs, while classmate
Bryana Chambers added six kills plus one block. Sophomore
Damaris Gomez finished with five kills, two digs, and one block in the loss. Sophomore
Alexa Poss paced the offense with 18 assists and added 11 digs as well.
The Lions started out the first set well as they raced out to an early 7-2 lead behind three kills and three Warrior attack errors. Albright would maintain a lead of five at 11-6 and 13-8 before three-straight points pulled the Warriors back to 13-11. Following two-straight points from the Lions to make it 15-11, the Warriors won four of the next five points to make it a 16-15 game and force a Lion timeout. Two Lycoming errors brought the Lions lead back to 18-15 and a bad set made it a 19-17 contest following back-to-back Warrior points. The Warriors then won five-straight points to go up 22-19 and force a Lions timeout. However, the resilient Lions fought back to win four of the next five points to tie the first set at 23. The teams went back and forth into extra points and the Lions were able to take a 26-25 lead on a ball handling error. Unfortunately for Albright, the Warriors took the last three points to take the first set at 28-26.
Albright took the first point of the second set on a kill from Chell, but the Warriors won eight-straight points to take an 8-1 lead behind six kills. The Warriors continued to control play during the second set as they built a lead by as many as eight points early on. Up 14-6, the Warriors did not allow the Lions get under a five-point deficit for the second set as they registered a .364 hitting percentage. The third set would start as a back-and-forth affair as the score was deadlocked at three in the early stages. Lycoming would then take six of the next eight points to go up 9-5 in the fourth set. The Lions cut the lead down to 9-7 on two Warrior errors, but Lycoming killed a potential run by taking five of the next six points to go up 14-8. Lycoming held a 15-9 lead before it was the Lions that went on a run by taking four of the next five points to bring the lead down to three at 16-13. Albright would cut the Warrior lead down to two points on four different occasions during the last part of the third set, but were unable to break through as Lycoming completed the sweep.
The Warriors held a .271 hitting percentage compared to the Lions at .058, and held a 49-26 advantage in kills. Alysa McDevitt led the Warriors with a game-high 15 kills and a whopping .737 hitting percentage.
The Lions will return to action on Thursday, September 27
th when they will travel to face Penn State Harrisburg at 7 p.m. in non-conference action.
