OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Albright women's volleyball team was swept in three sets by six-time defending MAC Commonwealth champion Stevenson on Wednesday night in conference play.
With the loss, the Lions drop to 1-1 on the season and 0-1 in MAC Commonwealth play. Meanwhile, the Mustangs improve to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
Sophomore
Damaris Gomez led the Lions with a team-high six kills and added six digs in the contest, while classmate
Kaitlyn Chell added four kills, two digs, and two service aces. Sophomore
Alexa Poss paced the offense with 12 assists and senior
Kaylyn Haan finished with a team-high seven digs.
The Mustangs jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first set, and would extend it out to 9-2 in the early stages. Albright got as close as 10-5 before Stevenson ran off six straight points to take a 16-5 lead following an attack error. With the score at 21-7, the Lions fought to win five of the next six points to make it 22-12. Stevenson would eventually close the set out by winning three of the next four points. Stevenson hit at a .417 clip to Albright at .045.
The Lions took a 2-1 lead to start the second set after a kill from Gomez before the Mustangs ran off four straight points to make it 5-2. Albright would keep battling back and eventually tied the match at nine following a Mustang service error. However, the Mustangs then took control of the set by winning 13 of the next 14 points to take a commanding 22-10 lead. An attack error from the Mustangs ended the run before Stevenson finished the set off with the final three points.
Albright again started strong to begin the third set as they took a 5-4 lead after a kill from sophomore
Liz Bacovin. The Lions sat tied with Stevenson at seven before the Mustangs won 10 of the next 11 points to take a 17-8 lead behind three-straight service aces to close the run. Albright made one last charge with four straight points to make it 17-12 before the Mustangs ended the threat with four straight points of their own. A service ace from Chell and kill from Gomez brought the lead down to 22-15, but Stevenson ended the match with the final three points.
Kate Leftridge led the Mustangs with seven kills, 11 digs, and three service aces. Caroline Dangel paced the Stevenson offense with 16 assists.
The Lions will host a home tri-match on Saturday, September 8
th. They will open with Penn State Schuylkill at 10 a.m. before facing Bryn Athyn at 2 p.m.
