Turnovers Costly as Women's Basketball Falls to Widener

READING, Pa. – The Albright Lions women's basketball team (10-9, 5-5 MACC) could not overcome 21 turnovers as they fell to the Widener Pride (15-4, 6-4 MACC) by a score of 61-40 in MAC Commonwealth action on Wednesday night at the Bollman Center in Reading.

Freshman Abby Gaffney had a season-high 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting to pace the Lions, while fellow freshmen Gabby Boggs added eight points and Dejah Terrell delivered four points, nine rebounds, three assists and three blocks.

Devan Rimmer led the way offensively for Widener with 23 points (11-of-12 FTs), while freshman Erin Phelan added 18 points. 14 of Phelan's 18 points came in the second half.

Zaria Mohamed's jumper gave Albright an early 6-2 lead with 4:51 left in the first quarter, but Rimmer hit a layup on the other end to kickstart a 15-0 run and Madison Ireland's layup in the final seconds gave the Pride a 17-6 lead after one. Terrell sank a jumper to open the scoring in the second quarter to cut the lead to 17-8, but Phelan hit a jumper of her own on the other end and Widener held a double-digit lead the rest of the way. Rimmer's three-point play at the 3:26 mark extended the lead to 29-12, but Gaffney scored the next six points to bring Albright back within 11 at 29-18. An 8-2 spurt from Widener closed the half and opened up a 37-20 halftime lead for the visitors.

The Pride stretched the lead to 23 at 45-22 with 5:11 left in the third quarter, but Albright battled back with an 8-1 run to close the quarter and Gaffney's layup made it at 46-30 game at the end of three. Widener held their largest lead of the game at 60-36 with 2:12 to play, before the Lions got a couple of late buckets from Boggs and freshman Kayana Chisholm.

Albright shot 18-of-51 (35.3%) from the floor and 1-of-12 (8.3%) from deep, while Widener was 22-of-61 (36.1%) from the floor, 0-of-7 from three and connected on 17-of-21 (81.0%) from the free throw line.

The Lions held a slight 34-32 advantage on the boards, led by Terrell's nine boards and eight from Mohamed. Kyra Schenk had six rebounds to pace Widener.

Albright hosts Lycoming on Saturday, Jan. 26 at the Bollman Center at 3 p.m.
