Women's Hoops Drops Heartbreaker to Lycoming

READING, Pa. – Lycoming's Kelly Vuz hit a pair of free throws with 16 seconds left and the Albright Lions women's basketball team (10-10, 5-6 MACC) dropped a 53-50 heartbreaker to the Warriors (14-6, 8-3 MACC) on Saturday.

In a back-and-forth second half, the Lions took a 49-48 lead on Zaria Mohamed's jumper with 4:25 left and shortly after, a Gabby Boggs free throw made it 50-48. The score would hold for nearly two minutes before Vuz tied the game at 50 apiece on a jumper with 1:43 left.

Trailing 52-50 after Vuz's free throws, the Lions' Dejah Terrell had a layup roll out in the final seconds and missed a three at the buzzer following a Kayla Kline free throw that would have tied the game.

Boggs had 14 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks to lead the way for Albright offensively, while Mohamed and Terrell added 10 points apiece. Terrell also contributed 10 rebounds and four steals.

Kline paced Lycoming with 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting, while Becca Painter and Akilah McFadden added nine points apiece.

Terrell hit a three with 7:13 left in the opening stanza to give the Lions an early 8-3 edge and they led 13-9 after a Mohamed free throw, but Lycoming closed the quarter on a 12-3 run that was capped by a Ryanna Lamoreux layup at the buzzer to make it a 21-16 game in favor of the Warriors. Lycoming led 23-20 before Shaunna Bruker's layup kickstarted a 9-0 run for Albright and a triple from Amina Rauf gave opened up a 29-23 lead with 1:56 left in the half. The Warriors scored the final five points of the half to cut the lead to 29-28 heading into the locker room.

The game was tied at 30 apiece in the early stages of the third quarter before Mohamed's layup opened up a 9-1 spurt for Albright and Terrell capped the run with a three to make it a 39-31 game with 3:45 left in the third quarter. Lycoming quickly responded with an 8-0 run of their own and McFadden's three-point play tied the game at 39 with 2:08 left in the third quarter. The Warriors led 44-43 heading into the fourth quarter and after a three from Rauf gave the Lions a 47-44 edge with 6:11 to play, the two teams would trade the lead over the next few minutes before Mohamed's afore-mentioned jumper.

Albright was 19-of-68 (27.9%) from the floor, 3-of-16 (18.8%) from deep and 9-of-17 (52.9%) from the charity stripe, while Lycoming hit 20-of-53 (37.7%) from the field, 2-of-11 (18.2%) from beyond the arc and 11-of-17 (64.7%) from the free throw line. The Warriors hit 5-of-8 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter.

The Lions held a 50-33 edge on the boards led by Boggs' 15 rebounds and Terrell's 10. Erica Lutz had 16 rebounds to pace Lycoming.

Head coach Janice Luck's squad is back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 30 when they head to Arcadia to battle the Knights at 6 p.m.
