Women’s Soccer Upsets No. 14 Arcadia, 2-1

GLENSIDE, Pa. – In a thrilling MAC Commonwealth battle on Saturday afternoon, a goal by senior Jillian Lapidus in the opening seconds and a goal by junior Lauren Haley in the final seconds of the game lifted the Lions to a 2-1 win over No. 14 Arcadia.

The win is the first for Albright women's soccer over a nationally-ranked team in school history.

The Lions improve to 8-6 on the season and 2-2 in MAC Commonwealth action.  Arcadia falls to 12-2-2 overall and 3-1-1 in conference play.

Just 13 seconds into the game, Albright took the lead after Lapidus netted a rebound off Haley's initial shot from the left side.  Both shots from the goal were Albright's only shots in the first half, as the Knights controlled the ball for a majority of the action.  From Arcadia came 11 shots in the first 45 minutes, causing sophomore goalkeeper Olivia Donkus to make three saves.

In the second half, the Knights created many scoring opportunities, but were unable to find the back of the net until there were 40 seconds left in regulation.  Junior Kayla Murphy sent in a corner kick and found the head of classmate Erin Vander Plaat to provide an equalizer for Arcadia, 1-1.  Donkus tallied three more saves in the second half.

With 3 seconds on the clock, the Lions were rewarded their own corner kick.  After commotion in front of the net following the kick, Haley struck the ball for the game-winner.  The Lions topped the nationally-ranked Arcadia for a conference victory.

Overall, the Knights controlled the shooting and outshot the Lions 28-4, however, held only a slim advantage in shots on target, 7-4.  Haley led the Lions with two shots and Arcadia was paced by Vander Plaat who had eight shots on the day.  The Knights had seven corner kicks to Albright's one.

Donkus totaled six saves in the contest to earn her seventh win of the season.  In the net for the Knights, junior Brianna Williams registered two saves.

The Lions will travel to Lycoming College on Wednesday, Oct. 23 for a 3:30 p.m. contest.
