SCRANTON, Pa. – It took until the 4
th quarter for the Albright field hockey's team first shot of the game, but they made the most of it as a goal from junior
Bailey Lehman lifted the Lions to a 1-0 on the road against Scranton in non-conference play.
With the win, the Lions improve to 4-7 overall and snap a three-game losing streak. Meanwhile, the Royals drop to 6-4 overall. Albright is 3-0 against Landmark Conference teams this season.
The opening quarter saw a lot of action around the midfield with the first shot coming for the Royals at the 2:43-mark. Scranton would be unsuccessful on a pair of penalty corners to close out the first quarter. The Royals continued to control play in the second quarter as they held the Lions without a shot in the entire first half. Scranton nearly got on the board in the final seconds off a penalty corner as junior Lions goalkeeper
Brynne Schoppe made her first save of the game on Gracie McClatchy.
Scranton nearly broke the scoreless tie in the 40
th minute following a penalty corner, but Schoppe stood tall by stopping back-to-back shots. The Royals had another good chance stopped by Schoppe following a penalty corner in the 42
nd minute, and the Lions blocked two more shots to keep the game scoreless into the fourth quarter. Lehman broke the scoreless tie 45 seconds into the fourth quarter after junior
Jennifer Crumling fed her the ball following a battle in front of the net with the Royals goalkeeper. It was the Lions that controlled play following the goal in the fourth quarter as they held the Royals without a shot in the final 15 minutes.
The Royals held an 11-3 shot advantage for the game, and a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal. Scranton also held an 8-1 advantage in penalty corners as the Lions lone penalty corner came with just over three minutes left in regulation. Schoppe earned the win with her first shutout of the season after making four saves in the full 60 minutes. Royal goalkeeper Claire McAliister suffered the loss after making one save in the full 60 minutes.
Albright will return to action on Saturday, October 5
th as they will travel to face Hood in MAC Commonwealth play at 12 p.m.
