FREDERICK, Md. – Behind a strong .358 team hitting percentage, the Albright Lions women's volleyball team picked up a straight-set sweep (25-20, 25-23, 25-15) of Hood on Wednesday night in MAC Commonwealth play.
With the win, the Lions improve to 9-9 on the season with a 1-5 record in MAC Commonwealth play. It is Albright's first road conference win since 2013. Meanwhile, the Blazers fall to 1-24 and 0-6 in conference play.
Sophomore
Grace Serafin led the Lions with a career-high 11 kills on a .500 hitting percentage, and posted five digs. Junior
Brooke Franklin followed with nine kills behind a .615 hitting percentage, while first-year
Grace Andrefski posted seven kills on a .462 hitting percentage along with three blocks. Junior
Paige Westra added seven kills, while first-year
Shelby Cheuvront led the team with 17 digs. Junior
Alexa Poss paced the offense with 31 assists, and added four kills.
The teams went back and forth to start in the first set as neither team had a lead of more than two points until the Lions went up 12-6. Hood held a 5-4 lead before the Lions won eight of the next nine points. Albright would maintain around a five-point lead through the middle portion of the set until the Blazers cut the lead down to 19-17. Albright eventually went up 22-20 before winning the last three points to take set one. Kills from Westra and Andrefski helped the Lions pull the set out.
Hood went up 3-1 early in the second set, but the Lions battled back to go up 6-4 just like in the first set. The Blazers made it an 8-7 game before the Lions won three of the next four points to go up 12-8. The Lions extended its lead to 14-9 following kills from Westra and Andrefski, and would use four-straight points to go up 18-11 after a pair of Blazer points. Albright took its largest lead of the match at 21-13, but the Blazers battled back to get within four points at 23-19. Hood won four of the next five points to get within one point of the Lions at 24-23, but Andrefski halted the rally with a kill to close out the second set.
After each team traded back-to-back points to start set three, the Lions won four of the next five points to go up 6-3 behind four kills. After the Lions extended its lead to 8-4, the Blazers won six of the next seven points to take a 10-9 lead. However, Albright took the lead back for good by taking four of the next five points to go back up 13-11. Hood got within one point at 14-13 before the Lions closed out the set and game by winning 11 of the last 13 points. Six of the last 11 points were kills for the Lions as they posted a .385 hitting percentage for the game as a team.
Emma Elizondo led the Blazers with nine kills, and Kameron Crawford paced the offense with 12 assists.
The Lions will return to action on Tuesday, October 29th, when they will host Messiah for their final regular season home game at 7 p.m.
