Women’s Soccer Earns 3-1 Conference Win Against Widener

READING, Pa. – A pair of goals by sophomore Diza Hasanaj and another added by classmate Autumn Bieber lifted the Albright women's soccer team to a 3-1 conference victory over Widener on Wednesday evening at Shirk Stadium.

Both Albright and Widener are now 1-1 in conference play and the Lions improve to 7-5 overall.

The win marks the third for Albright women's soccer against Widener since 2009.  The Lions are now 3-2-5 against the Pride in contest history.

Widener got on the board first in the 11th minute of the game, as first-year Melissa Koch played a long through-ball to senior Lexi Slusher who shot across the goal to net the ball in the bottom left.  Just three minutes later, Albright junior Amanda Fulcher battled her way down the left side of the field to the corner and crossed the ball in front of the net to find the head of Hasanaj for a 1-1 game.

After a Widener foul in the box nearing the 60th minute, Hasanaj converted a penalty kick for a 2-1 lead and her second goal of the game.  Another free kick outside the box was placed in the upper left net by Bieber to extend the lead to 3-1 at 73:58.

Albright held a slight advantage in shots on goal, 12-10, and both teams took six shots on target.  Hasanaj and junior Lauren Haley led the way for the Lions with four shots each.  Three members of the Pride notched two shots, including Slusher, senior Alyssa Dionisio, and junior Isabella Hill.

Sophomore goalkeeper Olivia Donkus made five saves on the night, earning her sixth win of the season for the Lions.   In the net for the Pride, Ashton Houbary registered three saves and faced a total of 12 shots.

The Lions will host Lebanon Valley at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 9 for a conference contest.
