UNION, N.J. - Sophomores
Gabby Boggs and
Dejah Terrell posted double-doubles to lead the Albright women's basketball team to a 78-64 win over Kean University in the Kean Tip-Off Tournament championship game on Saturday afternoon.
Albright starts the 2019-20 off with a four-game winning streak and Kean falls to 1-1 on their opening weekend.
Boggs was named the tournament's MVP and posted two career-highs in the win, pulling down 18 rebounds and scoring 17 points. The sophomore went 7-of-12 from the floor and 3-of-4 from the line while totaling 26 rebounds and 30 points in the tournament.
With 19 points and 10 rebounds, Terrell led the Lions after going 7-of-11 from the floor, 2-of-4 from beyond the arc, and 3-of-4 from the free-throw line in the win. Terrell was named to the All-Tournament Team as she scored a total of 38 points and 22 rebounds this weekend.
Sophomores
Brady Wassell and
Maggie O'Hare each notched double-digit scoring, with 14 and 12 points, respectively.
Senior Payce Lange scored 17 points and graduate student Cindy Foresta pulled down six rebounds to pace the Cougars.
From the first whistle to the half, play between the Lions and the Cougars remained even with a score of 29-27 in favor of Kean after 20 minutes. A 14-2 run for the Lions in the middle of the third quarter was sparked by a fast break layup from Terrell and earned the lead for the Lions, which they increased through the end of the game. The fourth quarter was highlighted by a series of three-pointers from O'Hare, Wassel, and senior
Hailey Dayton that helped the Lions outscore the Cougars 51-35 in the second half.
Albright's field goal percentage increased each quarter for a final 30-of-67 (44.8%) from the floor, 7-of-25 (28%) from beyond the arc, and 11-of-13 (84.6%) from the free-throw line. Kean shot 35.2% (25-of-71) from the floor, 22.2% (6-of-27) from beyond the arc, and 57.1% (8-of-14) from the line. Albright held a strong 55-31 rebound advantage, led 18 from Boggs, 10 from Terrell, and 8 from Wassel.
Albright women's basketball will return to action on Thursday, Nov. 21 as they head across town to Penn State Berks for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
