WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Junior
Bryce Schaffer and senior
Will Griffith led the Albright men's and women's swimming teams on Saturday to wrap up day one of the Diamond City Invitational.
The morning session began with the Albright men's 200 freestyle relay of
Maliq Williams,
Harrison Hunsberger,
Will Griffith, and
Chris Laite placing third in 1:29.99. In 500 freestyle,
Teag Culver took third (4:56.36), Hunsberger earned fourth (4:46.56), and
Will Griffith grabbed fifth (5:00.45). Laite finished the 50 freestyle in 22.84 to take sixth and junior
Bryce Schaffer placed 10
th in 23.46. The men's team wrapped up the morning by finishing second in the 400 medley relay in 3:43.14 by the team of Schaffer,
Corey Hausler, Williams, and
Will Griffith.
The Albright women's swimming team kicked off the morning with the team of
Megan Misurelli,
Alaina Ricci,
Juli Hyatt, and
Sammy Murphy finishing sixth in the 200 freestyle relay. The 50 freestyle featured three Albright swimmers placing in the top 15. Hyatt led the pack to finish in eighth in 26.37, junior
Maggie Jones returned to the pool from her soccer season for a 12
th place finish in 26.66, and Murphy grabbed 13
th in 26.76. The 400 medley relay of Ricci, Hyatt, Misurelli, and Murphy earned a fifth place finish to cap the morning session.
Schaffer and
Will Griffith led the evening session with two first-place finishes. Schaffer earned gold in the 100 butterfly in 52.41 to set a Diamond City Invitational meet record and
Will Griffith finished first in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:47.61. The men's 800 freestyle relay of Hunsberger,
Will Griffith, Culver, and Laite also earned gold with a time of 7:22.32. Hunsberger finished fifth in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:50.03.
Jabril Thompson notched a ninth place finish in the event with a 57.20. The men's 200 medley relay of Schaffer, Hausler, Williams, and Laite finished third in 1:41.00. Culver finished his 400 IM in second place with a time of 4:30.19, while Hausler took eighth in 4:46.28 and fifth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:03.29. First-year
Drew MacDonald added a tenth-place finish in the 100 breaststroke clocking in at 1:06.87.
Also in the evening session, the women's 200 medley relay team of Ricci, Hyatt, Misurelli, and Jones finished with a sixth time of 1:58.79. Individually, Ricci earned a seventh place finish in the 100 fly in 1:05.82. The 800 relay team of senior Cait Bedesem, Hyatt, Jones, and Murphy finished in fifth with a time of 8:46.97.
The Albright Lions will dive into day two of the Diamond City Invitational tomorrow morning at 10 a.m.
