READING, Pa. – The Albright Lions women's lacrosse team dropped a hard-fought 13-8 decision to Washington College (MD) on a chilly Wednesday night in non-conference action at Shirk Stadium.
With the loss, the Lions drop to 1-2 overall on the season after facing their second of three-straight Centennial Conference opponents. Meanwhile, the Shorewomen improve to 1-1 on the young season.
The Lions jumped out in front quickly at 1-0 just 13 seconds into the game as senior
Sophie Bass scored on a free position shot after winning the opening draw control. Washington struck back to tie the game at the 25:31-mark before freshman
Ashleigh Tortorice gave Albright the lead back 1:21 later after Bass found her in front of the net. Freshman
Maddie Taylor then extended the Albright lead to 3-1 on a free position shot at the 19:22-mark, but unfortunately for the Lions that would be the last goal they would score in the first half. The Shorewomen scored five-straight goals in the final 19:02 to take a 6-3 lead into halftime. The Lions had five turnovers during that stretch.
Albright started off strong in the second half as they cut the deficit to 6-4 just 1:16 in after freshman
Taylor Filmer scored unassisted. Washington answered the goal with one of their own at the 26:16-mark before junior
Kelly Baumann countered with her first goal of the game just 2:05 later to make it 7-5. The Shorewomen then took control of the game as they scored three-straight goals in 3:55 to take a 10-5 lead at the 19:33-mark. Freshman
Lauren China ended the run with her first goal of the game at the 17:49-mark, but the Shorewomen came back yet again with a goal just 48 seconds later to make it 11-6. Baumann tallied her second goal of the game at the 14:26-mark to make it 11-7, but they were unable to sustain momentum to cut further into the deficit. Washington answered again with just over seven minutes left, and Bass would post her second goal of the game at the 2:38-mark to conclude the Lions scoring for the night.
The Lions held a slight 31-29 shot advantage for the game, but the Shorewomen held a 27-21 advantage for shots on goal. Washington held a 23-17 advantage in ground balls, while Albright held a 14-9 advantage in draw controls. Sophomore
Terae Mason suffered the loss after making 14 saves in the full 60 minutes of action. Shorewomen goalkeeper Isabella Richardson made 13 saves in the full 60 minutes to earn the win. Bass led the Lions with three points behind two goals and one assist, while Baumann added two goals.
Albright will return to action on Saturday, March 2
nd as they will travel to face McDaniel at 12 p.m. in non-conference action.
