AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Albright Lions baseball (3-7) split a doubleheader with the Keuka Wolves (1-7) on Tuesday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Field in Auburndale.
Albright took game one by a score of 5-4, while Keuka captured a 10-4 decision in the nightcap.
Game One
Albright took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth and held on for the 5-4 victory in game one.
A pair of singles and an error loaded the bases in the frame before senior
Jesse Fikslin delivered the go-ahead run with a sac fly. Earlier in the inning,
Jimmie Gentry led off with a bunt single, took second on a single, went to third on a throwing error and scored on an error charged to SS Brooks Vertoske to tie the game.
Junior LHP
Will Tokarski (1-1) fanned three and allowed just one hit in 1 1/3 IP of relief to earn the win for the Lions. RHP
Phil Staehle (1.0 IP) and RHP
Logan Adams (1.0 IP, BB, K) combined to close things out for head coach Jeff Feiler's squad as Adams notched his first save.
The Lions grabbed an early 3-0 lead in the second as a single and walk put two men on before
Jeremy Brubaker's three-run blast to left opened the scoring.
Keuka battled back to take a 4-3 lead with a pair of runs in the third and fourth innings. Brooks Vertoske's two-run single in the third cut the lead to 3-2 and Dave Verrett scored a run after plating one via an RBI double in the fourth inning to give the Wolves the lead for the time being.
Sophomore southpaw
Kyle Smith received a no-decision for Albright after giving up four runs on seven hits to go along with three walks and a strikeout in 3 2/3 IP. Wyatt Conklin (0-2) was dealt the loss for Keuka and allowed five runs (three earned) on seven hits while walking three and fanning six in seven innings of work.
Brubaker (2-3, HR, 3 RBI, R) and senior
Jeff Yordy (2-4, R) both collected multi-hit games for the Lions.
Game Two
Dan Bamann came through with a two-run triple as part of a four-run first to give Keuka an early 4-0 advantage in game two. The Lions got a run back in the third as freshman
Austin Martinez reached on a fielder's choice, went to second on a walk and scored on
Joe Suppa's RBI single to cut the lead to 4-1, but that was the closest they would get.
Freshman RHP
Willie Kimmel III (0-1) surrendered four runs on nine hits to go along with a strikeout in three innings of work and was dealt the loss for Albright. K.C. Howe (1-1) got the win for Keuka after giving up four runs (three earned) on seven hits while walking and fanning a pair in 5 1/3 IP.
The Wolves broke the game open with a trio of runs in the fourth and fifth including a two-run single from Tyler Krowiak that stretched the lead to 10-1. A pair of freshmen combined to knock in three runs for the Lions in the home half of the sixth as
Nick Sklenarik plated a run with a two-run triple and classmate
Lew Meringo followed with an RBI single.
Junior
Brandon Daubert (2-4, 2B) and freshman
Will Algard (2-3, 2 2B, R) both recorded multi-hit contests for Albright, while senior
Kyle Gantert tossed a scoreless inning in relief.
The Lions return to action on Wednesday morning when they battle Ramapo at 10:15 a.m.
