CLERMONT, Fla. – The Albright Lions softball team (5-7) split a pair of games at The Spring Games on Friday in Clermont.
Albright picked up a 5-2 win over Lawrence (2-10) in the first game of the day and dropped a 5-4 heartbreaker to Wisconsin-Stevens Point (5-7) in the afternoon.
Game One
The Lions took the lead for good with four runs in the top of the sixth as a triple and a fielder's choice put two runners on before junior
Abigail Lord delivered a go-ahead, two-out, two-run single to make it a 3-2 game. Lord advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored when
Nicole Salerno reached on an error charged to Lawrence SS Rachel Urich, while senior
Kelly Cembrale also added an RBI triple in the inning.
Freshman
Allison Melahn (2-2) tossed a one-hitter in a complete game effort to earn the win for Albright. Melahn gave up two runs on one hit to go along with three walks and four strikeouts. Madeline MacLean was dealt the loss for Lawrence after allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits to go along with two walks and a strikeout in six innings of work.
Ceara Larson's two-run shot in the top of the first gave the Vikings a 2-0 lead for the time being. The Lions got a run back in the fourth as junior
Jessica Rodriguez drew a leadoff walk, went to second on a sac bunt, took third on a wild pitch and scored on
Camille Sears' sac fly.
Rodriguez (2-3, 2B, R) and senior
Jordan Chell (2-3, 3B, R) both had multi-hit games for the Lions.
Game Two
Wisconsin Stevens-Point grabbed a pair of runs in the top of the seventh as the Lions dropped a 5-4 heartbreaker on Friday.
Lauren Luedtke drew a one-out walk and scored on Madi Greenaberg's RBI double to tie the game before Anna Palicka followed with an RBI double of her own to score Greenaberg and give UWSP the lead.
Sears (1-4) was dealt the loss for Albright after allowing two runs on two hits while walking three in 2 1/3 IP. Haley Barnes (4-1) was charged with one run on five hits to go along with two strikeouts in four innings of work and recorded the win for the Pointers.
The Pointers had tied the game at three in the top of the fifth on Luedtke's sac fly before Albright quickly answered in the home half of the frame as Chell led off with a single, took second on a fielder's choice and scored on Salerno's two-out RBI single to give the Lions a 4-3 lead for the time being.
Melahn gave up three runs on eight hits while walking a pair and fanning one over 4 2/3 IP in a no-decision for Albright.
UWSP got the scoring started with a run in the top of the first, but the Lions got a pair back in the home half of the frame as Sears delivered an RBI single and Lord knocked in a run with a sac fly. Ashley Cohen's RBI single in the third tied the game at two, but Albright made it a 3-2 game in the bottom of the inning as Sears doubled and later scored on an error charged to Cohen at second base.
Chell (3-4, 2 R) and Sears (2-4, 2B, RBI, R) both had multi-hit games for Albright.
The Lions close out their Florida trip with games against Hamilton and Maine-Farmington tomorrow at 9:30 and 11:45 a.m.
