OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Albright Lions men's lacrosse team was unable to overcome a first half offensive barrage from Stevenson as they fell 20-4 to the Mustangs on Saturday night in MAC Commonwealth play.
With the loss, the Lions fall to 0-8 overall and 0-2 in MAC Commonwealth play. Meanwhile, the Mustangs improve to 3-6 overall and 2-0 in MAC Commonwealth play.
Stevenson opened the scoring on its first offensive possession before adding a man-up goal at the 13-minute mark of the first quarter to go up 2-0. The Mustangs added three more goals, and eventually took a 5-0 lead at the 10:27-mark of the first quarter. Sophomore
Ethan Gain ended the Mustangs run with a man-up goal at the 8:36-mark of the first quarter off a pass from classmate
Carson Babcock. Stevenson would add two more goals in the first quarter to take a 7-1 lead into the second. Albright got a decent scoring chance at the end of the first quarter, but had two shots within 10 seconds of each other turned away. The Mustangs added to its lead at the 13:18-mark of the second quarter to go up 8-1 before tallying three goals in 56 seconds to take a commanding 11-1 lead. Stevenson used a long offensive possession to score its next goal at the 8:09-mark before adding four more goals to close out the half up 16-1.
The Lions defense started strong in the second half as they forced three Stevenson turnovers in the opening five minutes. The Mustangs would add two goals in the third quarter with one of them coming on a man-up situation. Sophomore
John Gilbert ended the Mustangs run with his first goal of the game at the 12:10-mark of the fourth quarter as Babcock notched his second assist as well. Gilbert and Babcock would connect again at the 7:59-mark to make it 19-3 before sophomore
Shane Early concluded the scoring on a man-up situation at the 2:13-mark of the fourth quarter.
The Mustangs held a sizable 68-29 shot advantage for the game, and a 34-9 advantage for shots on goal. Stevenson also held a 56-28 ground ball advantage, while winning 24 of the 27 face offs for the game. Babcock led the Lions with three points behind a trio of assists, and Gilbert tallied two goals. Conor Scafidi suffered the loss after making 14 saves in the full 60 minutes of action. The Mustangs used four goalies in the game with Marc Poust earning the win after starting, and making one save in 25:14 of action. JT Thelen led Stevenson with nine goals in the win.
Albright will return to action on Wednesday, April 3
rd when they will host Lycoming at 4 p.m. in MAC Commonwealth action.
