Women's Lacrosse Outlasts Stockton, 14-11

READING, Pa. – The Albright Lions women's lacrosse team battled to win a back and forth 14-11 contest against Stockton on Saturday afternoon at Shirk Stadium in non-conference action.

With the win, the Lions improve to 3-2 overall and avenge their double overtime defeat against the Ospreys last season. Meanwhile, Stockton of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) falls to 2-1 on the season.

The Lions struck early against Stockton as they scored two goals within a span of 38 seconds to take a 2-0 lead at the 27:16-mark. Freshman Ashleigh Tortorice notched the first goal after her classmate Taylor Filmer found her in front of the net, and junior Kelly Baumann scored the second goal unassisted. Stockton would strike back with two goals of their own after receiving yellow cards prior to each to tie the game at two with 22:18 left in the first half. Senior Alexis Filmer would put the Lions ahead at the 18:48-mark on a free position shot, and senior Sophie Bass followed 1:05 later with her first goal of the game to extend the Lions lead to 4-2 at the 17:43-mark. After a few scoreless minutes, freshman Lauren China would make it a 5-2 game with her first goal of the game at the 10:41-mark. After Stockton made it a 5-3 game at 9:11-mark, the Lions would close the first half out on a three-goal run to take an 8-3 lead into halftime. Freshman Jamie Mullen started the run with her first collegiate goal, and was followed by China with her second of the game just 55 seconds later. Bass would close the run with a free position shot goal at the 5:28-mark.

Stockton started the second half strong as they scored two goals in the first 2:39 to make it an 8-5 deficit. However, the Lions responded with two goals of their own within 1:08 of each other to bring the score back to 10-5 at the 24:56-mark. Bass tallied another free position goal, and was followed by Tortorice scoring her second of the game. The Ospreys responded again with back-to-back goals to make it a 10-7 contest at the 19:28-mark, but the Lions had an answer just 50 seconds later when Tortorice scored on a free position shot to make it 11-7. The teams would then trade goals over the next two minutes to bring the score to 12-9 at the 16:29-mark. Stockton made it a two-goal game at the 12:56-mark, but Albright responded yet again with a goal at the 10:39-mark from freshman Abbie Moist. Baumann then put the cap on the Lions scoring with her second goal of the game at the 9:54-mark to make it 14-10. Albright was able to hold possession during a key stretch of 3:38 during the final 10 minutes to prevent the Ospreys from rallying.

The Lions held a 32-24 advantage in shots for the game, and 22-19 in shots on goal. Albright also held a 19-17 advantage in ground balls, while the Ospreys held a 15-12 advantage in draw controls. Bass led the way with five points on three goals and two assists, while Baumann followed with four points behind two goals and two assists. Baumann also set a new program record with six caused turnovers. Tortorice notched a hat trick with three goals, and Taylor Filmer tallied a pair of assists in the win. Sophomore goalkeeper Terae Mason tallied eight saves to earn the win in 58:30 minutes of action, while Osprey goalkeeper Brooke Hallett suffered the loss after making eight saves in the full 60 minutes of action.
