Baseball Drops Pair to Alvernia

READING, Pa. – The Albright Lions baseball team (8-18, 4-10 MACC) dropped a pair of contests to the crosstown rival Alvernia Golden Wolves (20-9-1, 11-3 MACC) on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Kelchner Field in Reading.

Alvernia took game one by a score of 7-0 and pulled away in the late innings of game two en route to a 9-2 win in the nightcap.

Game One
Alvernia grabbed an early 3-0 lead with a pair of home runs in the top of the first as Ian Shaffer hit a solo shot on the first pitch of the game and Nathan Sides followed two batters later with a two-run homer to left.

Colin Rieger's two-run single in the top of the third extended the Golden Wolves' lead to 5-0. Alvernia tacked on a pair of RBI singles in the top of the seventh to extend the lead to 7-0.

Junior Will Tokarski (2-4) was dealt the loss for the Lions after allowing six runs on 10 hits to go along with two walks and four strikeouts in six innings of work. The southpaw settled in nicely and tossed three consecutive scoreless frames to finish his outing. Zack Landy (4-1) surrendered one hit while fanning five in a complete-game effort to earn the win for Alvernia.

Senior Jeff Yordy went 1-3 with a single in the contest for Albright.

Game Two
The Golden Wolves broke the game open with six runs in the top of the seventh as Rieger knocked in a pair with a two-run double and pinch-hitter Nick Nutile hit a two-run homer to center in the inning to make it a 9-2 game in favor of the visitors.

The Lions had cut the lead to 3-2 on Yordy's solo shot in the home half of the sixth. The home run was Yordy's team-leading fourth of the season.

Alvernia opened the scoring with an RBI single from Sides as part of a two-run third to make it a 2-0 game. Albright immediately responded with a run in the home half of the frame as freshman Nick Sklenarik reached with a one-out single, stole second, advanced to third on Jimmie Gentry's single and scored on a wild pitch charged to Golden Wolves starter Nicholas Marotta. The visitors added an unearned run in the fifth to make it a 3-1 game before Yordy's afore-mentioned home run.

Freshman Willie Kimmel III (1-3) surrendered five runs (four earned) on six hits while walking five and fanning three in six plus innings of work and was dealt the loss for Albright. Marotta (5-3) gave up two runs on six hits to go along with a walk and four strikeouts in 5.0 IP to earn the win for the Golden Wolves.

Senior Austin Roth (2-3) registered a pair of singles for the Lions.

The two teams will close out the series on tomorrow afternoon at Angelica Park in Reading with first pitch set for 12 p.m.
