Women's Lacrosse Shut Down by Stevenson Defense

READING, Pa. – The Albright Lions women's lacrosse team was unable to overcome a strong defensive attack from Stevenson as they fell 14-7 to the Mustangs on Wednesday evening at Shirk Stadium in MAC Commonwealth play.

With the loss, the Lions drop their second-straight to move to 11-4 overall and 5-2 in MAC Commonwealth play. Meanwhile, the Mustangs maintained sole possession of first place with their ninth-straight win to improve to 12-3 overall and 6-0 in MAC Commonwealth play.

The Lions had the first chances to take the lead early as they ripped two shots in the first minute of the game, but both were saved. Stevenson then opened the scoring at the 25:38-mark to take a 1-0 lead before extending it 43 seconds later on a free position shot goal. Albright was unable to get anything going to respond to the Mustangs goals as turnovers began to push the offense out of sync. The Mustangs then scored again at the 18:20-mark to make it a 3-0 game. Albright finally got on the board at the 11:20-mark when freshman Ashleigh Tortorice scored her first of the game before scoring again just a minute later to cut the Stevenson lead down to 3-2. Unfortunately for the Lions, they were unable to continue momentum as the Mustangs closed out the half with two-straight goals to take a 5-2 lead into halftime. The Lions had three shots in the final five minutes that were all saved by the Mustangs goalkeeper.

The Mustangs continued the run with their third unanswered goal to make it 6-2 just 48 seconds into the second half, and would add two more goals to take an 8-2 lead at the 24:16-mark. Senior Sophie Bass broke up the five-goal run with a free position shot goal at the 23:29-mark to make it 8-3, and freshman Lauren China continued the small rally just over two minutes later as she deflected the ball into the net after an initial shot from Bass. Stevenson then again had another answer to the back-to-back goals as they tallied three in a row to go up 11-4 at the 17:26-mark of the second half. Bass ripped her second goal of the game at the 15:59-mark to make it 11-5 before Stevenson came back with back-to-back goals to go up 13-5 with 9:53 left in regulation. China would sneak in her second goal of the game on a free position shot at the 9:15-mark, and Bass would conclude the games scoring with her third of the game with 58 seconds left in the game.

Stevenson held a 35-23 advantage in shots for the game, and a 22-19 advantage in shots on goal. The Mustangs held a slight 18-17 advantage in ground balls, and won 15 of the 23 draw controls. Bass led the Lions with six points behind three goals and three assists, while China and Tortorice each tallied two goals. Junior Kelly Baumann also tallied two assists in the loss. Sophomore goalkeeper Terae Mason suffered the loss after making eight saves in the full 60 minutes, while Mustang goalkeeper Mack Ferguson posted 11 saves in the 60 minutes to earn the win.

The Lions will return to action on Friday, April 19th as they will host No. 21 Colorado College for their final home regular season game of the season at 3 p.m.
