Softball Rallies to Earn Split with Widener

CHESTER, Pa. – The Albright Lions softball team (9-13, 3-1 MACC) rallied for an 8-7 victory in 11 innings in game two and earned a split of a doubleheader with the Widener Pride (17-9, 3-3 MACC) in MAC Commonwealth action on Saturday afternoon at Widener Softball Field.

Widener won game one by a score of 5-0.

Game One
Ariel Silva's two-run shot in the first gave Widener an early 2-0 lead and the Pride tacked on solo runs in each of the next three frames en route to the 5-0 win in game one.

Junior Camille Sears (2-7) gave up five runs (four earned) on eight hits to go along with two walks and two strikeouts in six innings of work. Kait Jaworski (10-4) surrendered two hits while walking two and fanning four in a complete game effort to earn the win for the Pride.

Senior Stephanie Pomante and freshman Nicole Salerno recorded hits in the contest for the Lions.

Game Two
Sears' go-ahead RBI single in the top of the 11th lifted Albright to a come-from-behind 8-7 victory over the Pride in the nightcap.

In the top of the 11th, junior Brooke Yerger started the inning at second base, advanced to third on a bunt single and scored on Sears' afore-mentioned RBI single. Both teams traded runs in the 10th inning as Nora Harrison scored a run on an error charged to Widener SS Carli Benozich and Hope DiMario plated a run via an RBI single.
Freshman Allison Melahn (5-3) allowed seven runs (three earned) on 14 hits while walking three and fanning nine over 11 innings of work and got the win for the Lions. Isabella Kostic (1-2) gave up a pair of unearned runs on five hits and was dealt the loss for Widener.

The Pride jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in game two as Benozich and Marissa Camac delivered RBI singles in a four-run first. Harrison's two-run shot in the top of the second cut the lead in half at 4-2 and Yerger plated a run via an RBI groundout in the inning. Senior Jordan Chell was hit by a pitch to lead off the top of the third, advanced to second on a single, took third on an error and scored when Kaitlyn Chell reached on an error charged to Camac at third to tie the game at four. Widener grabbed a 6-4 lead on Ally McDowell's two-run single in the third, but the Lions tied the game at six on Harrison's second home run of the game in the top of the fifth.

Harrison is the sixth player in program history to hit two home runs in a game and the first since Armida Roman hit a pair on April 29, 2015 at York (Pa.).

K. Chell (2-4, 2B, RBI, R), Harrison (2-5, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 3 R), junior Jessica Rodriguez (4-5, 2B) and Sears (3-5, RBI) all registered multi-hit games for the Lions.

Albright hosts Lycoming in a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Albright Softball Field with first pitch is set for 1 p.m.
