READING, Pa. – Junior
Camille Sears tossed a no-hitter in game one and the Albright Lions softball team (10-14, 4-2 MACC) recorded a split with the Lycoming Warriors (14-8, 3-5 MACC) in MAC Commonwealth action on Sunday afternoon at Albright Softball Field.
The Lions won game one by a score of 5-0, while the Warriors took a 4-2 decision in the nightcap.
Sears is the first Albright pitcher to throw a no-hitter since Sammi O'Connor accomplished the feat on March 13, 2016 versus Hunter.
Game One
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when junior
Abigail Lord led off with a single, advanced to second on a sac bunt and scored on
Brooke Yerger's RBI double to put the Lions on the board. Classmate
Jessica Rodriguez followed Yerger with an RBI double of her own to extend the lead to 2-0.
Sears (3-7) walked three and struck out a pair over her seven innings of work in the no-hitter. The Howard Beach, N.Y., native retired the final nine batters she faced.
Liz Nace (5-4) was dealt the loss for Lycoming after giving up five runs on 11 hits while walking and fanning a pair in 6.0 IP.
Albright broke the game open with three runs in the sixth as Sears and
Stephanie Pomante started the inning with consecutive doubles to knock in a run, senior
Kaitlyn Chell plated pinch-runner
Brooke Franklin with an RBI double and scored on Lord's RBI single to make it a 5-0 game. The Lions recorded a season-high seven doubles in the contest including a pair from Yerger.
Lord (2-3, RBI, R) and Yerger (3-4, 2 2B, RBI, SB, R) both registered multi-hit games for Albright.
Game Two
Trailing 4-2, the Lions had the bases loaded with two outs in the fifth, but Mikalya Aldenderfer got Lord to ground sharply back to the mound and end the inning. Albright threatened once again in the seventh, but Aldenderfer worked her way around a leadoff single from Rodriguez.
Aldenderfer (9-4) got the win for the Warriors as she surrendered two runs on six hits to go along with four walks and two strikeouts in seven innings of work. Freshman
Allison Melahn (5-4) received the loss for the Lions after giving up four runs on eight hits while walking two and fanning one in 4 2/3 IP.
The Warriors struck first with a run in the top of the fourth as Kayla Kline drew a leadoff walk, took second on a sac bunt, advanced to third on an infield single and scored on Morgan Christine's RBI single. Kline delivered the big blow with a two-run triple as part of a three-run fifth for Lycoming that stretched the lead to 4-0. The Lions battled back however with a pair of runs in the home half of the frame as Yerger doubled and Rodriguez walked to put two runners on before senior
Jordan Chell and Sears came through with consecutive RBI singles to cut the lead in half at 4-2.
Rodriguez (2-2, 2 BB, R) and Yerger (2-4, 2B, R) both recorded multi-hit contest for the Lions, while Sears fanned a pair over 2 1/3 shutout innings of relief.
Albright hosts Arcadia in a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader on Wednesday, April 10. First pitch of game one is set for 3 p.m.
