Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Falls in Close Game to Wesley, 2-1

DOVER, Del. – The Albright Lions field hockey suffered a tough 2-1 loss to Wesley on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in non-conference play.

With the loss, the Lions fall to 3-5 overall as their two-game winning streak gets snapped. Meanwhile, the Wolverines improve to 5-2 overall.

Each team traded some chances in the first quarter that resulted in none of the balls finding the back of the net. The Lions received six penalty corners in just over a two minute span, but could not convert despite intense pressure. Albright continued to play strong defense in the second quarter as they kept the Wolverines off the scoreboard into halftime.

Wesley would break the scoreless tie in the 40th minute as Jessica Behornar got the Wolverines on the board. Freshman Megan Keller then responded three minutes later in the 43rd minute to tie the game at one with her first collegiate goal on an assist from Sydney Baxter. The Wolverines failed to clear following a Lions penalty corner opportunity as Baxter stole the clear attempt and found Keller, who ripped the ball on the left side of the Wolverine goalkeeper. However, the Wolverines would score the eventual game-winning goal with 22 seconds left in the third quarter off a penalty corner opportunity. The Lions controlled play throughout the fourth quarter, but could not break through to tie the score. Albright continued to fight back in the final minutes and nearly tied the game with just over two minutes left in regulation as junior Bailey Lehman had a shot off a penalty corner batted out by a Wolverines defender.

The Lions held a 19-10 shot advantage for the game, and a 12-6 advantage in shots on goal. Albright also held an 18-5 advantage in penalty corners for the game. Junior goalkeeper Brynne Schoppe suffered the loss after making four saves in the full 60 minutes, while Wolverines goalkeeper Lauren Berry earned the win after making 10 saves in the full 60 minutes.

Albright will return to action on Tuesday, September 24th when they will travel to face Immaculata at 4 p.m.
