MacDonald Nets Late Penalty Kick for 1-0 Victory

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – A penalty kick goal by sophomore Alexander MacDonald lifted the Albright men's soccer team over Gwynedd Mercy in the 88th minute of regulation in Gwynedd Valley on Saturday morning.

The Lions improve to 5-5 in non-conference play, while the Griffins fall to 3-7-1.

In the first half of the game, Albright outshot Gwynedd Mercy by a 4-2 margin, but the Griffins led in corner kicks, 3-2.  Senior goalkeeper Billy Mullen made two saves for the Lions and Griffins' junior Tyler Blair also registered two saves.  The first half remained scoreless; neither teams were able to find the back of the net.

Albright pressed offensively in the second half, posting 10 more shots and three saves from Mullen.  The last shot came at 88:37 from MacDonald, converting a penalty kick after Albright drew a foul in the Griffins' box.  With 1:23 left in the game, the Griffins did not respond.

Overall, Albright outshot Gwynedd Mercy by a 14-6 margin, however, the Griffins had a 5-4 edge in shots on goal.  MacDonald paced the Lions in shots with four, followed by sophomore Billy Hanratty and junior Quinlan Poley with three.  Sophomore Tyler Bascone took three shots for the Griffins.

Mullen made five total saves for the Lions, earning his fifth win and first shutout of the season.  Blair added one save in the second half for three on the day for the Griffins.

Albright men's soccer will return home to face Lancaster Bible College on Tuesday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m.
