READING, Pa. – The Albright Lions women's volleyball team picked up another dominant straight-set victory as they defeated Penn State Brandywine 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-10) on Wednesday evening at the Bollman Center.
With the win, the Lions improve to 2-0 overall as they start 2-0 for the first time since the 2009 season. Meanwhile, Brandywine of the PSUAC drops to 0-2 overall.
Freshman
Grace Andrefski led the Lions with a team high eight kills, and posted a .313 hitting percentage. Juniors
Liz Bacovin and
Paige Westra each posted six kills in the win as Westra tallied a .545 hitting percentage. Junior
Kaitlyn Chell led the Lions with a team-high 11 digs, while adding four kills and three aces. The Lions offense was once again paced by junior
Alexa Poss, who posted 23 assists for the second-straight game, along with adding seven digs and three kills.
Early on in the first set, the Lions battled back and forth with Brandywine as the Nittany Lions held an early 4-2 advantage after back-to-back Albright attack errors. The Lions would then win four out of the next five points to go up 6-5, and would finally wrestle the lead back for good in the first set after Brandywine went up 8-7. Albright would win eight of the next nine points to go up 15-9 behind three kills from Andrefski in that stretch. The Lions would go on a run of taking five of the next six points to go up 21-13 after Brandywine made it a 16-12 game before winning the next four of five to end the first set at 25-16.
The Lions would come out strong in the second set as they raced out to a 7-2 advantage behind a pair of service aces and kills. Brandywine then won three-straight points to make it a 7-5 game before Albright responded with seven-straight points to go up 12-5 that was capped by an ace from freshman
Gabby Metviner. Albright would keep their advantage around a steady eight points for the majority of the rest of the second set before concluding with a 25-15 set win. Albright would once again get off to a strong start in the third set as this time they held an 8-1 lead. The Lions then built a lead by as many as 12 points at 16-4 before going up 19-6 after junior
Brooke Franklin tallied two-straight aces. Albright would then close out the match at 25-10 with a kill from Bacovin being the final point.
Albright will return to action on Saturday, September 7
th as they will participate in the Wilson College Tri-Match. The Lions will open with the Phoenix at 11 a.m. before taking on Wilkes at 1 p.m.
