READING, Pa. – The Albright Lions men's basketball team was able to pull away for a 74-63 win over Stevenson on Saturday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth play at the Bollman Center.
With the win, the Lions improve to 8-5 overall and 3-1 in MAC Commonwealth play, their third-straight win in conference action. Meanwhile, the Mustangs drop to 5-8 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
Junior
Isaiah Harris led the way with a game-high 18 points, while adding seven rebounds and two steals. Classmate
Samuel Majekodunmi inched closer to 1,000 career points with 13 points, and grabbed four steals along with four rebounds. Majekodunmi is now 21 points away from hitting 1,000. Junior
Sidney Brown posted a line of 12 points, seven rebounds, and three assists in the win as well. Junior
Troy Smoot led the Lions with five assists, and sophomore
Corey Simmons provided a spark off the bench with eight first half points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field.
Albright struggled from the field early as they did not make a field goal until the 16:47-mark of the first half. Stevenson took advantage by building a 7-1 lead at the 17-minute mark before the Lions battled back to make it 8-6 at the 15:45-mark. A three-pointer from Brown pulled the Lions within one point at 12-11 at the 12:21-mark, but Stevenson used a 12-4 run to take a 24-15 lead at the 9:08-mark to force an Albright timeout. The Mustangs held a 29-22 lead at the 4:38-mark following a layup before the Lions closed the half on a 10-0 run to take a 32-29 lead at halftime. Simmons scored six of the 10 points during the run.
Brown and Majekodunmi continued the run into the second half with back-to-back three-pointers to go up 38-29 at the 18:57-mark, and force a Mustang timeout. Stevenson closed with four points at 40-36 with 15:48 left in the second half before six-straight points put the Lions up 46-36 at the 13:12-mark. A three-pointer at the 12:14-mark got the Mustangs within six points at 48-42, but the Lions struck back with a 12-2 run to go up 60-44 with 9:38 left in the second half. Sophomore
Mark Brinkley Jr. was key in the run with five-straight points off the bench. Stevenson got as close as nine points at the 5:51-mark, but the Lions were able to prevent them from getting closer than that the rest of the half. Harris scored 17 of his 18 points in the second half for the Lions.
The Lions shot 45.9 percent (28-of-61) from the field overall after shooting 48.4 percent in the second half. Albright went 8-of-20 (40%) from beyond the arc, and 10-of-21 (47.6%) from the free throw line. Meanwhile, the Mustangs shot 37.5 percent (24-of-64) from the field, and just 7-of-26 (26.9%) from beyond the arc. Stevenson went 8-of-14 (57.1%) from the free throw line, and held a slight 42-39 edge in rebounds.
Jaylin Johnson led the Mustangs with a double-double behind a team-high 17 points and 10 rebounds. The Lions limited leading scorer, Norman Hughes, to just seven points on 2-of-15 shooting from the field. Cam Harris scored nine points off the bench with a trio of three-pointers.
Albright returns to action on Wednesday, January 8
th as they will travel to face Lycoming at 4 p.m. in conference play.
