Men's Soccer Suffers Setback at Widener

CHESTER, Pa. – The Albright men's soccer team suffered a 3-0 setback at Widener in MAC Commonwealth play on Tuesday.

With the loss, the Lions fall to 0-6 in conference and 3-11-1 overall. Meanwhile, the Pride improves to 2-3 in MAC Commonwealth play and 7-7 overall.

The first half was competitive as Widener held just a slight 9-7 shot advantage over Albright. The Lions applied pressure on the Pride back line as they fired off three shots from senior Yaniv Gonyoe, first-year Luke Fanning, and sophomore John Villano in the 18th, 19th, and 21st minute, to which Widener goalkeeper Vinnie Nocito stopped all three. Widener finally broke through the Lions back line and found the back of the net in the 30th minute to take the 1-0 lead. First-year goalkeeper Chris Denholm made two saves to close out the first half as the Lions trailed by one.

Widener controlled the pace in the second half, firing off four shots in the first ten minutes of action. The Pride got another shot past Denholm in the 69th minute to take the two-goal lead over the Lions. Widener then converted a goal off a penalty kick in the 78th minute following an Albright foul inside the box to put the Pride up three. Albright failed to get a shot off in the second half as Widener claimed the 3-0 conference win.

Widener held a sizable 23-7 shot advantage and a 11-3 shot on goal advantage over Albright. Denholm receives the loss for the Lions despite making a career-high eight saves in 90 minutes of action. Nocito earns the win for the Pride with three saves in 71:44 minutes of action.

Albright returns to the pitch on Thursday at 7 p.m. as they travel to Bryn Athyn to make up the non-conference match that was originally scheduled for September.
