Women's Basketball Takes Down Delaware Valley, 68-50

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – Albright Lions women's basketball completed a home-and-home series sweep of Delaware Valley with a 68-50 victory on the road in MAC crossover play on Friday night.
 
With the win, the Lions improve to 4-2 overall and maintain their 2-2 MAC Commonwealth record in the final two weeks of regular season games. Meanwhile, the Aggies of the MAC Freedom fall to 0-4 on the season.
 
Junior Brady Wassel recorded her second double-double of the season behind a game-high 17 points along with 13 rebounds. Wassel also added two assists and two steals in the win. Classmate Maggie O'Hare recorded 15 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field, while grabbing a game-high five steals. Junior Amina Rauf tallied 12 points off the bench behind going 5-of-8 from the field and dished out a career-high six assists. Junior Abby Gaffney posted 11 points and four assists, while Gabby Boggs grabbed 12 rebounds and nine points.
 
Both teams struggled to score early in the first quarter as the first point was scored at the 7:30-mark on a free throw from the Aggies. Albright scored its first point off a free throw from Boggs at the 5:20-mark, which started a run of seven-straight points from the Lions to go up 7-3. Albright continued its run to close out the first quarter to go up 12-8 despite shooting just 18.8 percent from the field. Following a jumper from Rauf to open the second quarter, the Aggies cut the Lions lead down to 14-12 at the 8:33-mark of the second quarter. The teams traded points for the next five minutes before the Lions used a 9-2 run to go up 27-19 at the 2:13-mark after leading 18-17. Albright was able to take a 31-25 lead into halftime as they shot 50 percent from the field in the second quarter.
 
The Lions grabbed their first double-digit lead of the game at 35-25 after opening the second half with back-to-back baskets from senior Allison Dienes and Wassel. Albright continued to pull away from the Aggies as they used a 12-4 run to go up 47-31 at the 1:45-mark of the third quarter. Rauf capped a 20-point third quarter for the Lions on a layup with 15 seconds left to make it a 51-35 game. Albright did not allow its lead slip under double-digits in the fourth quarter behind shooting 54.5 percent from the field.
 
Albright shot 41.7 percent (25-of-60) from the field and 45.5 percent (5-of-11) from three-point range. The Lions went a solid 13-of-16 (81.3%) from the free throw line, and held a sizable 43-29 rebounding advantage. Meanwhile, the Aggies went 37 percent (20-of-54) from the field and just 1-of-13 (7.7%) from three-point range. Delaware Valley went 56.3 percent (9-of-16) from the free throw line and scored 19 points off 16 Lions turnovers.
 
A trio of players scored a team-high 11 points for the Aggies as Taylor Richardson just missed a double-double with nine rebounds. Lauren Moretti posted team-highs of six assists and five steals along with her 11 points for the Aggies, while the Lions held Haley Keenan to six points after she scored 21 points the night before.
 
The Lions will return to action on Thursday, March 4th as they will host Stevenson in MAC Commonwealth play at 7 p.m.
