READING, Pa. – The Albright women's basketball team used a balanced scoring attack to defeat Stevenson 62-60 at the Bollman Center on Thursday night in MAC Commonwealth play.
With the win, the Lions notched their third-straight win as they improved to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in MAC Commonwealth play. Meanwhile, the Mustangs dropped to 2-5 overall and in conference play.
For the second-straight game, junior
Brady Wassel led the Lions in scoring as she tallied 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field. Wassel also added five rebounds, three steals, and two assists in the win. Classmate
Maggie O'Hare recorded 14 points, eight rebounds, and two assists while
Gabby Boggs added 12 points, seven rebounds, and three assists.
Albright worked its way out to a 9-4 lead at the 6:09-mark of the first quarter after going 3-of-5 from the field to start. The Mustangs battled back with a 10-2 run in just under a three minute span to take a 14-11 lead at the 2:54-mark of the first quarter. The Lions responded with six-straight points off a three-point play from Boggs, and a three-point field goal from O'Hare to take back the lead after the first quarter at 17-16. The teams struggled in the first half of the second quarter as they went a 3:33 span without a field goal. Down 24-22, Wassel snapped the Lions 6:37 field goal drought with a layup to tie the game at the 1:31-mark. The Lions continued to play strong defense into the second half as they held the Mustangs without a field goal for a span of 3:48 in the third quarter. Albright was able to take advantage of the field goal drought by taking a 39-31 lead at the 4:21-mark. Rauf made another three-pointer to push the Lions to a 10-point lead at the end of the third quarter at 46-36. The Lions opened the fourth quarter with five-straight points in the first 32 seconds to go up 51-36. Albright continued to control play as they worked its way out to their largest lead of the game at 60-48 with 2:58 in regulation. However, the Mustangs were able to make things interesting with a 10-1 run to cut the Lions lead down to 61-58 with 12 seconds left in regulation. Wassel was able to split a pair of free throws to seal the Lions win at 62-60.
Albright shot 38.6 percent (22-of-57) from the field and 47.1 percent (8-of-17) from three-point range. The Lions went 10-of-17 (58.8%) from the free throw line and forced 16 Mustang turnovers. Meanwhile, the Mustangs shot 41.4 percent (24-of-58) from the field, and 33.3 percent (6-of-18) from beyond the arc. Stevenson went 6-of-10 (60%) from the free throw line and held a slight 34-30 rebounding advantage.
Olivia Coleman paced the Mustangs offense with a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds. Brandi Hall was the second Mustang that hit double-figures with 14 points and added a game-high seven assists.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow, March 5
th as they will travel to Stevenson for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
