Men's Soccer Ties With Penn State Berks, 0-0

READING, Pa. – The Albright Lions men's soccer team battled to a scoreless double overtime tie on Saturday afternoon at Shirk Stadium in non-conference action.

With the tie, the Lions record now stands at 0-2-1 in the second week of the regular season. Meanwhile, the Nittany Lions record now stands at 0-2-1.

The Nittany Lions controlled play early as they registered three shots in the first 15 minutes of the game, all of them saved by Lions sophomore goalkeeper Hunter Stump. Junior Yaniv Gonyoe had a decent look at the net in the 17th minute that was saved by Nittany Lions goalkeeper Jose Aparicio. The Lions then had a big opportunity to get on the board in the 28th minute when sophomore John Villano was awarded a penalty kick after getting fouled in the box. However, Villano had his shot saved by Aparicio. First-year Luke Fanning nearly broke the scoreless tie in the 41st minute when he had a free kick ring off the crossbar.

Gonyoe had another chance saved by Aparicio in the opening minutes of the second half, while Stump had to fend off a decent look from Berks in the 53rd minute. Villano then found the crossbar in the 56th minute that kept the game scoreless. The last best scoring chance came in the second half when the Nittany Lions hit the crossbar in the 81st minute. Berks controlled most of the first overtime as they outshot the Lions 3-1, but could not find the back of the net. Albright had a pair of shots in the second overtime go wide that solidified the scoreless tie.

The Nittany Lions held a slight 16-15 shot advantage and an 8-7 advantage in shots on goal. Stump made eight saves for the Lions in the full 110 minutes, while Aparicio tallied seven saves in the full amount of time.

The Lions return to action again tomorrow, September 12th as they will host Arcadia at 1 p.m.
