Field Hockey Dealt Overtime Loss in Season Opener

READING, Pa. – The Albright Lions field hockey team opened its 2021 regular season with a heartbreaking 1-0 setback in overtime to Bryn Mawr on Thursday night at Shirk Stadium.

The Owls were able to take advantage of an untimed penalty corner in the first overtime to score the only goal in the contest. For the Lions, this was their first regular season game played in 673 days with the last coming on October 30th, 2019 when they defeated Stevenson.

The first quarter was a defensive struggle as both teams each registered a shot on goal. First-year Olivia Lorah had the Lions shot with a blast from the top of the circle off a penalty corner. Bryn Mawr controlled play throughout the second quarter as they held the Lions without a shot. Lions junior goalkeeper Adele Thomas kept the Owls off the scoreboard with a pad save at the 15-second mark.

Following a scoreless third quarter with each team registering one shot, the Lions continued to fend off the Owls as they turned away four penalty corner chances within a three-minute span to start the fourth quarter. Bryn Mawr had one last opportunity in the final minute go wide to send the game to overtime. In overtime, Thomas came up big on a one-on-one chance in the 63rd minute to keep the game scoreless. Following another Thomas save, the Lions had their best chance in overtime when first-year Lamya Mejias attempted a cross from the right side of the crease that just missed connecting on classmate Jenna Crosby's stick. The Owls received a penalty corner with 3.5 seconds left in the first overtime, and could not convert before being awarded a second corner with no time on the clock. Bryn Mawr broke through when Courtney Cutone put the ball into the cage following a pass through traffic from Eva Yacura.

The Owls held an 11-2 advantage in shots and a slight 9-6 edge in corners. Thomas suffered the loss after making six saves during the full 70 minutes. Maggie Titus earned the win in the cage for the Owls after making just one save.

Albright returns to action tomorrow, September 3rd as they will travel to face Arcadia at 7 p.m.
